Just out of interest, could you give a bit more info on why getting an apple TV would be worthwhile and what exactly you are able to do with it if you have an iPhone 4 with iOS4.3
I've been interested in this for a while and always wanted a direct answer from someone who actualy uses it.

Well, for starters, let's just say you have a bunch of videos or photos on your device that you want to show, but syncing and all that other crap is too much of a pain. With the new AirPlay feature you can stream any media directly to your ATV from the phone.

Then if you're like me and you have two hifis set up in different parts of the house, you can have the same music playing on your ATV connected to your surround system and the other hifi connected to your iTunes at the same time. You just select multiple speakers using the airplay feature.

If the iTunes store was allowed to sell us media in SA it would be the death knell of DStv, Musica and all the video stores here. With this recent increase in DStv's price I am actually seriously considering setting up a US based iTunes account and just watching what I want, when I want it. They have all the best shows and the latest movies on offer. I think an episode of any major series costs about 0.99c to rent for 48 hours. The R600+ I spend on DStv could go towards an uncapped 4mbps line and I reckon if I spend $50 a month on iTunes I'd be happy.

I got the Apple TV a few weeks back... Best thing since sliced toast! Although not being able to rent movies here I basically use it as a remote connection from my iTunes to my TV.

Now with iOS4.3 I can watch my iphone-recorded videos too, without syncing to Itunes first. Straight from my phone to my tv ... In HD. it rocks! Totally worth it:)

I've always wondered the same thing with the lack of streaming services available here it doesn't make much sense to me. I've got a Mini attached to my TV and that does it all plus a whole lot more.

With 4.3 you can now stream your content across the network between iOS devices and machines with iTunes.
 
I must say my desire hd was a great choice. I have an ipad and it is great too but the ios would frustrate me on my phone.

get a us itunes account, you can then buy shows and movies using itunes vouchers.

Based on this, I definetly think that ATV is a usefull, worthwhile thing to have and i'll be trying to make a plan to get my hands on one.

I know that they are selling for $99 but if you want to get from one of the local sites here, they are charging an absolute rip-off price of R1600! - Now that is just ridiculous.
Anyone know the best place to get one of these?
 
eBay. Or if you have a friend in the US who can receive and remail it for you, try the Apple store or B&H PhotoVideo.

People who charge R1600 for this item deserve to have their noses bitten off by Hannibal Lector.

Honestly, if the studios don't want to offer you the shows legitimately then as far as I'm concerned they shouldn't have a problem if you use alternate means to acquire the shows. The apple tv still makes little sense to me - no movies, no rentals, NO NETFLIX! . . No point.

No, do I have to point out my previous post? An Apple TV seems pretty pointless to me if you cannot legitimately use it in the way it was intended.

You can still use it to stream DVD rips, BR Rips and music that you import into iTunes, you don't have to buy from the Apple store.

I guess I've got so used to having a full computer attached to my plasma that I've been spoiled. Having perian means enjoying front row without itunes. :D
 
Don't know Perian, but the ATV is a little bit bigger than the size of a packet of cigarettes. Which is a lot smaller than any full computer. ;)

I'm fortunate, I've never had any difficulties finding space for a Mac mini.

Perian lets you play a whole slew of video formats through QuickTime (and by extension front row) without having to convert them to an iTunes compatible format. http://perian.org/
