Hi,

Not sure how many people following other messages boards with regards to International peering points and the likes, but it would seem everybody are seeing a spike in bandwidth usage since the release of the latest Apple Update earlier.

This is an extract from an email on the North American Network Operators mailing list:

Various EU IXPs are showing spikes of various sizes at the moment

LINX: http://cl.ly/image/3n1521432S1R
LONAP: http://cl.ly/image/0W2K0q3p3f2h
AMS-IX: http://cl.ly/image/0r0J2b331E2A
DE-CIX: http://cl.ly/image/0D1B181N103A

Akamai (who I believe Apple use for at least some of their CDN delivery) are also showing a nice hotspot in Europe at the moment: http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/dataviz1.html

I wonder how this will affect our local providers over the next couple of days. Just how many Apple users are there in South Africa??

Any ISP out there willing to show us usage graphs??

Michael

Both Openweb and Plugg have warned that they have seen an increase in traffic and slower speeds on shaped uncapped accounts in their respective threads tonight, never knew an update could throttle the internet

Well JINX has gone from 3-4gbps at peak to the current 9-10gbps. That is over double...

So that 10gbps port is hitting saturation which is not good for anyone. Why dont the ISP's just shape the IOS updates, it's not a realtime service so would at least keep important services stable.

Is it not an option for the ISP to host the file locally for download. Or isn't that allowed by the apple bs machine

Some content does get cached, even so - it'll still see a spike up in traffic :(
The combination of GTA5 being released and iOS7 in a short space of time has a lot of users downloading a lot of data.

This,

Estimate how much you think GTA 5 has been downloaded?

We've tried that, but too many users complained that installing new apps took too long, so we reverted.

However, we introduced free Night Surfer, and people then say intelligent things like "What am I going to do with this, I'm asleep then. What kind of idiots give away data we can't use".

And this is when we respond that if you start your iOS update when you go to bed, most of it won't count against your normal usage, and hopefully if enough of you do this, you will all still be able to use the internet normally during the day.

Same thing will apply on Patch Tuesday ...

I wish we could see the total implication of GTA 5 and iOS updates on the SA networks this week

indeed, just annoyed that it took Axxess 4 days to admit it and then only via a very vague network status update, that they haven't updated since. I phoned them and asked them to update more often, saves us having to bother connecting and will most likely reduce their call volumes.

Just a quick heads up here, iOS 7.0.2 has been released.
Rather run the update via the device itself. iTunes has a download of a little over GB :(
