Let's start a constructive debate.

How will we know which one is better, we'll have to take each OS and compare it with regards to certain categories.

Help me come up with these categories.

The operating systems themselves don't really deliver anything fundamentally different from each other. The choice comes down to what hardware you prefer and whether want an open OS which every Chinese, and Russian can hack without effort or a closed OS which requires a bit more effort to hack. Me personally won't go near Android:). I'll use an iOS or Windows phone :)

Also the fact that there a gazillion versions of Android is another reason to avoid it all costs from a developer perspective.

Ah firstly the hacking. Meet Google Play services: http://officialandroid.blogspot.com/2014/04/expanding-googles-security-services-for.html. Secondly fragmentation. Meet Google play services: http://www.androidcentral.com/another-android-fragmentation-report-misses-point. WRT the operating systems not delivering anything different I disagree specially with Google now.

Htc has stated building htc one m8's with Windows. Exact same hardware and the windows phone battery almost lasts twice as long as the Android variant. Ill give the link on request.

I see you do not have a single clue what security is all about esp when it comes to hacking, both are equally open for abuse or I guess you never heard or played with de-compilers?

I can't help but feel this is all my fault :p

The only thing that's really struck me as a very impressive differentiator going over to Android now is auto-backup photos with automatic photo stories. That's hella cool. Oh and being able to switch data on/off in the notification panel.

A lot of the points that irritate between the OSes should be fixed up by the release of iOS8 and Android L respectively. Things like for instance, selectable keyboards and inter-app communication etc on iOS8, and useful notifications in Android. The one thing that really bugs me about Android still is the lack of a decent native music player and the general ineptitude that comes with that, like the fact that it really doesn't know how to assign a music app to a headset in an intuitive way. And the Always/Just Once popups still strike me as poor UI design.

I'd also say that Android got a LOT smoother recently so credit where it's due there.

But yea...better/worse... really don't care much.
