I have an iPad 2 and bought a Cell C 2GB per month prepaid deal for it. I cut the sim to micro size, and installed. All has been working perfectly, I get lovely fast 3G signals.

I wanted to keep a check on my data use, so at the start of June I went into settings - usage, and would reset the data. That works, but it means having to remember to reset the data counter at the beginning of each month.

I went into a Cell C store, and asked them how I could check on my balance, and they said it was not possible I would have to take the SIM out the iPad and put it into my iPhone 4 (micro size) and then enter *101#

Not satisfied with this response, I played around in my settings on my iPad 2 - there is a way on the iPad 2

Go to:
Settings
Cellular data
SIM applications
Products and services
Balance enquiry
Accept

I see I have 2046.53 for July available. While in there, there are other handy Cell C options, where you can check RICA status etc

Hope this helps someone else

There is an App for $1.99 called Data Useage Pro which gives you comprehensive stats on useage via 3G and Wi-Fi. You can also set it to warn when you are approaching a set limit.

I recently purchased my iPad 3 and signed up for the R99pm 2 Gig special which Cell C is running, I am also unable to check my data bundle balance.. Under SIM Applications, all I see is Products and Services and Applications. None of which can give me my balance. Is it not possible for Cell C to send me the sms pin to my email address so that I can complete the registration on the web and check my balance that way?

Very happy with Cell C so far!

CellC needs an on net kind of login thing to check the balance. Similar to how 8ta does it.

Some family members bought iPads on special from CellC and they are too scared to use their data since they only have 500MB and they are afraid of going over. It's all rather silly really.

For now I will recommend to people to not go the CellC route when it comes to tablets.

I agree it is silly, but why not use your brain? You can purchase 50MB bundle (R7.50) on the beginning of every month (2nd), it will secure 15c/MB OOB for the next 30 days.
Why on the 2nd? Just my speculation - just in case it would go OOB on 31st. :)

Yeah for you and me and other technically minded people this is fine and easy to figure out. However I'm talking about people who are so scared of computers that they bought iPads because they heard it is easy to use. They don't understand megabytes and all that.

It helps very little if the iPad itself is so easy to use but there's no way to check your data usage that is easy for a non technical person to understand.

I'm definitely not going to try and explain to them that in order for it to be cheaper if they go over the included data they have to buy a bundle to secure cheaper bandwidth. They will then want to know why it's not included and why this is necessary.

Talking about speculation, I wonder whether Cell C is not doing something about this on purpose. They are probably making a lot of money on people who are going over the limit or by people who are not using their data because they are scared of going over the limit.

It think Cell cannot afford upsetting people, there are always strange teething problems, but not intentional policy. I think AKC learnt something hard during this year...
Re a small bundle, it can be added as a recurrent bundle to the contract. R7.50 is less than itemised billing charge and takes away OOB worries forever. :)
