iPad 2 here on Friday

Yay, my iPad 1 is 1 month old when the new iPad comes out here. Fanf#*kingtastic.

Err no you don't. ITunes needs to activate it, you don't have to register it.

For apps you have to register with ITunes, yes.

So when you activate it, is that not the same as registering with Apple? They put a +1 to their sales figures and register your device's hardware ID.

And if you want to install apps, can you do that without registering with iTunes?

I see ya'll getting excited, those are recommended prices – Let us wait two (2) more day and see how the retailers will price these toys. This is South Africa where you get rewarded for milking the consumers.....Keeping my fingers crossed but hopeless.

ITunes is the main reason why I didn't go for an iPod 2 - but there are a few others as well, such as USB, SD card, etc.

that's the core pricing. do they not own the istores here in south africa?

Noob question but can I just stick my iPhone sim card (vodacom topup contract) into an iPad and voilà?

Basically the reason why I am hesitant to go this route and probably won't in the end.

Yes.

Yes and no...

1) I am sure if you chop the SIM it will work (iPad 2 is 900Mhz capable)
2) Get a 3G wireless router (netgear, edimax, dovado) and use the Wifi to connect to 3G CellC Speedstick.

Option 2 is also good in future or to use prepaid MTN, Vodacom with iPad 1 or 2...

The cell c modems take a full size sim and the ipad takes a micro sim. You can cut the normal sim to be a micro sim but then you can't use it in the modem again. You could probably use the bit of plastic that falls between the micro sim and the credit card sized holder as an adapter of sorts to use an actual micro sim in a modem.

What about the data? You can get a micro SIM contract or prepaid with a bundle loaded. Or on Vodacom you can get a Data Only SIM which is linked to your contract data bundle so they can both share the same bundles etc.
And there's similar options like "Dual SIM"' from other providers. - But apparently CellC do not support 3G on the iPad.. o.0

iPad (1) doesn't do HSPA on 900mhz but would still work with a cell c sim. iPad 2 does support it so that's probably the biggest advantage over the ipad 1 :p

No. The iPad 2 uses a microsim, so you'll have to get a new sim or cut up your old sim card.

My sim is a microsim. I have an iPhone 4.

Would you guys recommend selling an iPhone 4 and getting an iPad 2 instead. I don't use the iPhone as my primary phone anyway.

Go for it! The iPad 2 is very funky and well-specced.

Enjoy!

Woho!!! this is awesome news. Can anyone recommend a wireless router that can support 21mbps? Then it will make sense to get a Cell C sim + iPad

That's quite impressive. For a change, we are not close to a year behind launch (on Apple products) at double the price.

Still, I'll be waiting for some of the Honeycomb tablets to hit the market.

Have you seen the latest Sony Android tablets? It's the sexiest tablet I've ever seen.

Deciding between that and the HTC Flyer. The Flyer has a stylus, so you can sketch on the display with it. Me likes.
