For one, there is only one range/modelset of Macbooks (and iPods, and iMacs) on the market at any one time. When Apple refreshes the line of these products, they retire the old ones.

In contrast, both the iPad 2 and iFred will be available in shops for the foreseeable future.

*EDIT: This doesn't mean the Macbook model numbering isn't silly. "Late-2011 17-inch Macbook Pro" is incredibly clumsy.

Just calling it an ipad is going to be confusing for people purchasing apps. Developers are eventually going to make apps that only work well on dual core and then quad cores with a certain gpu/ram requirement etc. etc. How are people going to know that a certain app works on their ipad? The developers will have to specify that the app needs a quad core cpu with at least a certain gpu and a minimum amount of ram instead of just say the app works on ipad 3 and higher.

MyBroadband’s naming policy
After Apple’s launch of “the new iPad” we realised that we couldn’t call the device that in headlines or comparisons. A year from now they would be nonsensical.

The consensus was that we’d call it the iPad 3.

Is it too late to backtrack on that?

Myself and colleagues at work are in agreement that it should be referred to as the "iPad 2.1".

"iPad" is the most horrible name Apple could ever have dreamt up for a tablet. I hate it with a passion.

But normally when Apple is hesitant to give one of their devices a new number, it gets a S at the back?

Works for them, keeps the products premium. Labelling concept similar to cars. Trust me spending R15k on an i5 MacBook, the buyer knows what they are after and couldn't care less about product names being more specific. As long as it's the new one, they know it's better.
