iPad getting spanked with criticism

I wonder if they'll release a "Heavy Flow" IPad

There are sure to be lots of these comments :D

I think the name is OK though. I'm not an Apple fan by any means, but this thing looks cool. Too big for me. I use my phone as my MP3 player- can even watch series etc on it. Something bigger than a smartphone, yet not as big as the iPad will be the sweetspot.

If it suits your needs that perfect. I just think in it's current form there are going to be a lot of people who won't buy it simply because it is very restrictive. It's sort of like the console vs pc argument with the gaming aspect.
I think geeks are pretty bad at predicting what Joe consumer wants and this is most definitely a consumer device.

Incidentally, what netbook do you have?
AAO

Interesting statement, what would you define as a consumer device? And while you're at it, what seperates Joe consumer from a geek?

Well it's an evolving market, the AAO is miles ahead of the original Asus EEEpc systems and its only a matter of time before we see some ION based netbooks out, but again we can't really compare this household appliance to a computer.

Seriously, some idiots will pay anything just for a logo of a blotch with a hap out of it.

I'll be honest for me my netbook is one of the biggest WTF products I own. It's a small, underpowered device, with crappy battery life, that does nothing particularly well at all and I'd swap it for a iPad tomorrow, heck I'd swap it for an iPad case tomorrow because it would suit my needs down to a t.

My netbook has a 9.5 hour battery life, which is about the same as an iPad. And it probably does everything better than an iPad. It's an Asus 1000HE and cost me R3000. It's also obsolete, there are much better ones out now.

I don't see a niche for the iPad, but I'm sure that some Apple enthusiasts will buy it.

A consumer device is something reliable my mom can pick up and use without a care in the world about getting it to do what she wants. She doesnt have to worry about operating systems, viruses, malware, upgrades. She can just enjoy content in whatever form she wants. And you're right - you shouldnt compare the iPad to computer - its not one. It's the beginning (or rebirth) of a new category of devices.

Glad to hear that your netbook has such stellar battery life - but thats where I think the comparisons between it and the iPad should end. As a photographer a netbook is fairly useless to me (actually its equally useless to me as a graphic designer and a desk top publisher too). When the logical comparison is made with a laptop netbooks fail miserably (with the exception of being easily misplacable :)) which is why I mentioned its my one true WTF device. It doesnt do anything really, really well. If I want to edit or create content on any scale I'm going to reach for my laptop - not a iPad and not a netbook because they're both ill-suited for that job. What the iPad is more suited to, when compared to a netbook, is content delivery.

I can already see the place in my workflow for the iPad. I'm out in the field and snap a shot, a bit of colour correction, tag it and off it goes to my editor and it's backed up on device. In the studio I can hand it to a client and they can see decent images as they're taken. Now this is technology that exists on the iPhone already but the iPad brings it to the next level. I'm not the only photographer who's gained a client or two by showing them my portfolio on my iPhone but now I get to show them big full size images - portrait or landscape, it doesnt matter which. In my business image and images count so serving up what the client wants to see with a bit of panache is not going to hurt me one bit.

As for recreational use - reading, watching movies, etc - this should be a better experience. When I'm at home or work I have all my digital content available to me then and there in a convenient package. When I'm going out town I can take the content I want with me.

That's if it is capable of doing what she wants it to do.

What app is this?

So do you download all your movies off the iStore?

Some non-power users will find it easier to surf the net, look at photos, videos etc on a iPad than on a pc.
The fact that it doesn't have as many "features" as a pc or smartphone is a major selling point.
It just does the basics really well.

There is a large market out there who will buy this thing simply because its so frikkin easy to use and cheap.

By the sound of it, it is.

Editing? There are a whole slew of lightweight image editing apps for the iPhone. Not heavy lifting stuff (although there are cloud apps available that do offer even more).

No, not all. We pay way too much for bandwidth here. I have hard drives full of movies from DVD's as well as content in other formats acquired from outside of the iStore.

It sure is but it doesnt hold all those 0's and 1's particularly well.

I think Apple made one crucial mistake here and that's not releasing it immediately. A month is just going to be too much for those who can't fathom something being different.

How is it easier? And cheap compared to what?

Have you ever taught an older person to use a pc before? Think about it.
Now don't you think you can teach somebody to use this iPad in under an hour?

R3500 is the cost (ignoring CORE prices), how much is a PC, smartphone or Laptop?

Please be more specific, I used to be in the DTP/graphic design field so I'm interested about these editors for iphones etc.

Let's hope the DRM plans only go as far as the applications, would be sly of Apple to block non-signed media.

With regards to memory on the device, will it be released with a memory slot or will you be forced to buy either a 16, 32 or 64gb version?

Or useful if already own a plethora of media playing, web browsing gadgets. It's the niche of niche.

USD500 *7.7*1.14+770 = R5 159, and that is being optimistic.

I can get a serious HP netbook with built-in 3G, and all sorts of wonderful features including 1366*768 for R4729 (incl) from PC International.

IMHO that's no contest for the HP. YMMV.

Unless you have first hand experience with teaching an elderly, technophobic someone to use the iPad I'm going to say you're assuming it's going to be easy. It hasn't exactly broken any of the fundamental stumbling blocks in terms of normal Mac OS/Iphone use.

So are you going to become a grey import agent for elderly people who want to write mails etc?

You can buy a very decent netbook for R3500. Samsung sells one for R3000, its got 1GB of memory, 160GB of hard-drive, 8 hours battery life, has USB ports and can play Flash files.

Eish boet! Try to stop being a geek for a minutes and think...

nevermind :)

My favourite photo apps atm are Best Camera and Photo stitch. I've also got a cropping app and photoshop.com which is a cloud one I mentioned earlier. There are plenty more apps available but 99¢ is usually my threshold and free is preferable. For more see here http://brainz.org/20-best-iphone-photo-video-applications/

They dont now so why would they start?

I think that is all in the specs. Haven't you read up on the device?
You can buy a very decent netbook for R3500.
I wouldn't dream about giving my mother a netbook. Cramped keyboard and a finicky trackpad? No thanks.

Don't bother arguing. Common sense takes second place to brushed aluminium and a shiny Apple logo it seems.
