Ipad vs Galaxy

The Galaxy is just too expensive, but one of the mybb articles stated that a new one might come out. Hopefully the prices will be more in line with the iPad2's

Sure the actual filesystem is there, but it's never exposed, it's been abstracted away. The reason is to eliminate complexity. It's really tough to explain to someone who's never used a computer how the file system works.

That argument is getting old. My maid that never had a computer before in her life was able to copy pictures off her LG(Symbian) phone onto the netbook I gave her and also put music onto the phone via USB cable that came with it without me showing her anything. She even linked the pictures on Facebook.

Face it Apple people are the only ones that argue con's as pro's. If Apple wanted to hide it they could without removing the ability totally for people that do want it.

Of course you can learn it but many people don't. I stick to what I said. For example my grandpa, and my girlfriend's dad, both don't know what the heck is going on with files.

And why would you want to? The whole file system metaphor is outdated and unnecessary on tablets, maybe even PCs too.

I had the Asus Transformer 16GB (sold it) and now have iPad2 3G 32GB. I suggest you play with both devices because each has key features that might suite your personal taste.

I would personally go for the Android device ...

Hardware-wise I think that the current generations of tables are pretty much on par but the Samsung will give you a little more freedom.
Apps are catching up fast ...

Apple may have sold 9 mill ipads but Android is going to be giving them a run for their money soon

Android on Samsung, Motorola, LG, Asus, Lenovo, Acer, HTC and HP devices might just give the iPad a run for it's money... ;)

As you said, a new one "might" come out but a new, 3rd gen iPad WILL be out before the end of the year.

Do Apple need push forward a new release? They sold 9.2million iPads in the last quarter and couldn't keep up with the demand then.

If the difference between iPad 1 and iPad 2 are any indication, I think that iPad 52 might be some to appreciate ... :)

For me, i simply cannot bother with a program like iTunes - and so apple is not high on my priorities list.

Also i had to help a friend find out about these iTunes vouchers and stuff - that really sucks that you cannot use you cc to buy apps.

Lastly no USB port

So based on those points, i would go for android - not necessarily only a galaxy

Just get the iPad. When we talk phones there is room for arguments, but when it comes to tablets there is one choice: iPad. People don't want tablets, they want iPads. Android will reduce Apple's lead with ICS (Android 4), but atm they are not on par. Way more native apps for iPad. No-one wants stretched phone apps to fit a larger screen.

If you're really picking a tablet based on being "open" vs. "closed" , then the Galaxy is not the most open tablet because the models i've seen don't even have SD-expansion slots. Also things like HDMI/TV-out and USB/Mini-USB ports is extremely important in this regardand you'll be surprised how many Android tablets don't have any of that.

Thing is the ipad don't have these things "out of the box" but you will always get a cable/accessory to do that (ipad does have a cable for vga/hdmi output to your tv) , it's not always certain what Samsung/whoever will add as accessories though.

Anyway, so far the most "open" tablet i've seen : http://us.toshiba.com/tablets/thrive/10-inch/

Very interesting read, but I have to argue that Apple didn't create the Tablet market, it just brought prices down for everyman. Tablets was born back in 2000 with Windows based tablet PC's.

Like I said at the start of the year, I will not say Apple or Android is winning until the December figures are in. As we did not have a full year of Android tablets to gauge the figures and iOS is now on Year 2. Android phone numbers only started to pick up after the 1st year of sales.

That being said, yes the iPad is great and I love my Android tablet, but I have to wonder what is going to happen when Windows 8 tablets come into play.

At this stage, in this country, the Ipad2 is definitely the best value for money. It's easily R3,000 cheaper than any of the competition. You can't find a Galaxy Tab 10.1" 3G for under R7000-R8000 , Ipad2 with 3G you can get for R5600 in the stores...
