iPad2 or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" ?

Want to get a tablet in the new year, I am currently leaning towards the Galaxy Tab. Would like to get some owners' opinions as I like Apple's build quality and the OS, but don't care too much for being so restricted.

Opinions are welcomed :D
 
I have had both. Currently only have the ipad2. But I think I should rather have sticked wigh the tab because I would want to do everything over 3G and not be reliant on a wifi connection. I am away from home now and know no one with internet here and cant update or install new apps larger than 20 megs. But if wifi access isn't a problem for you amd you don't mind the restriction then the ipad is better. Far fewer problems with apps. The ui is smoother and does what you expect it to do.
 
I just got an iPad 2 and love it. Would prefer a higher resolution display though. I'd say if you already have an iPhone then the iPad is a natural fit. Your cables & apps also work.
 
Give it a while. We will get a much better Android tablet hopefully soon, and in the not to distant future the ipad2 will be superceded, aka "old". Remember were are at least 6 months behind the times here.
 
Galaxy Tab. It's a no brainer :)

I am getting the Prime in Jan (got the Transformer at the mo). Had the iPad2. Won't get Apple again.

iPad2 even though I use Android Acer Iconia A500; the iPad is so much slicker, smoother and more intuitive. I regret getting an Android device. SG 10.1 may be different, but I suspect Android is the issue.
 
There is a lot more tablet orientated apps available for the iPad though if you're used to Android don't expect the same array of nerd tools without a cost of course.
 
I was faced with the same issue about a month back, did some online research, and went with the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I think it was an awesome decision, and don't regret it to this day.

Compared to the iPad2, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is slightly thinner, quite a bit lighter, has a slightly bigger screen, has a higher screen resolution and a higher pixel density (pixels per inch, higher = sharper crisper images, which is definitely noticeable; the iPad2 looks a bit crappy when sitting next to the Galaxy Tab 10.1), has more RAM (double), has higher resolution front and back cameras, supports HSPA+ 21mbps, and is more aesthetically pleasing on the exterior. It also runs Android Honeycomb 3.0 and will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 in the near future, which is the best Android version released to date.

I'm very happy with Android - there is full support in South Africa for the Android Market, unlike the iTunes App Store which is pathetic (in ZA) and you have to jump through hoops to get a US iTunes account. I buy all my apps using my local South African credit card as and when I need, and I get to see the price in South African rands, and I don't need to buy prepaid iTunes vouchers from 3rd party suppliers.

Also, there are far fewer restrictions with Android. With iPad2, you can't download apps or other content bigger then 20mb if you are on a 3G connection, which is an insane restriction if you ask me. You have to download these over a WiFi connection. You also aren't able to access Adobe Flash content.

Lastly, I believe the iPad2 comes with a 1 year warranty, whereas the Galaxy Tab comes with a 2 year warranty. I'm not 100% sure, but I know that if you get the Galaxy Tab from Vodacom/MTN/Cell C, you definitely get the 2 year warranty. I don't think the cellular operators are selling the iPad2, so you can't benefit from the extended warranty.

If you don't care about all of the above, then the iPad 2 is a really good device, and I would recommend it. Decide for yourself - check out the specs and reviews on GSMArena.com.

Thanks for this input - this is basically how I feel about it at the moment too.

Unless somebody gives a better argument than this I am going to get the Galaxy with a VC data contract when I get back from holiday :D

I updated my post with a few corrections and added a link, after you quoted my post. Go back and read it again (more reasons to choose Galaxy Tab).
 
I don't have a Galaxy so cannot comment on which is best.

All I can say is that since I got my iPad 2 about 2 months ago I haven't touched my Laptop or Netbook for work or personal usage.
I was also afraid about the "restrictions" of the iPad but that is not really such a big issue.

I would go for the iPad .
 
I'm happy with my iPad ... But there are annoyances and restrictions on it - like needing wifi for everything you do, despite having a full 3G signal

iStore is both the good and bad with the iPad. I love the fact that everything has been tested and approved to be in it ... So everything has the stamp of approval from Apple and I'm assured downloading it that the code if efficient and it'll work perfectly and smoothly on my iPad.

But Android has got more a variety of apps - and our IT engineers use it for wifi monitoring/info, Gsm tower locations and a host of things that we can't. Were stuck with *Angry Birds

* assuming you've used the work arounds to get to other iStores other than our local one

I've actually gone the other way.

My iPad is in semi-retirement ever since I moved to a 13" Air for my main PC. Its a little bigger and heavier than my iPad1, but with the full power of a quad-core i5 + Intel HD3000 GPU on 1440x900 LED screen + 128GB SSD, to use with full function OSs (OSX Lion/Win7 64). A real marvel in miniaturization.

Sure its in a different price bracket, but for me it fulfills the roles of both tab & lap. Still use the iPad occasionally for Flipboard & Zite though.
 
In my opinion

If your tech knowledge is low to medium, get an iPad

If your tech knowledge is anywhere above average, get an Android tab. I'd suggest waiting for the ASUS Transformer Prime if possible. It will be the best when it comes out, it's a desktop class cpu in a tablet.

I would agree. I got an iPad and soon realised it was too restrictive for my liking. It just cannot do a lot of things even my SGS can do.

I'm surprised. Appbrain reports the number of available android apps at 344762 as of December 20th while it's common knowledge that the Apple app store surpassed 500,000 back in May.

There must be a whole lot of Angry Birds versions to account for the disparity. :rolleyes:
