ipcop + ftp server + etc possible?

Good day wizards

At the moment I have an old little laptop at home with winxp on it and I'm using filezilla to download files from a seedbox.

I'm getting an old pc from a relative which, although very old, is still a lot faster than the current laptop.

So now I'm thinking...

There's a few pc's at the house. My dad's, my bro's, my mom's, my wife's laptop, and then of course my pc.

So since I'm setting up a new pc/server/thing to replace the laptop, I might as well put ipcop on it. I heard it's very easy to configure, can control bandwidth quota and most importantly - port prioritization! Yes, port prioritization so that I can still frag people online while the rest of the house abuse the internet.

So all good and well, but now the question is: what about the filezilla functionality? Can I still put software on the ipcop that will download files from the seedbox? Or is ipcop only ipcop and nothing else?

PS: does the port prioritization thing actually work?

Ipcop and Smoothwall are very similar I believe. Answer is yes in the case of Smoothwall Express. PC is dedicated.

Stevov, i believe ipcop cannot be a seedbox at the same time. You can have one pc a ipcop server and another a seedbox.

IPCOP is what you use when you have a P1 and don't know what to do with it.

Smoothwall is what you use when you have something better than that P1 and actually want your gateway to act as more than be just a dumb terminal. Go Smoothwall. I've got Windows Fanboi friends that swear by it (but are so disgusted when I tell them its Linux).

Does smoothwall have a gui or is it a headless server? Can I still install an ftp client on it?

And speaking of ftp, do you get an ftp client that can be controlled via a web interface? I've heard of ftp SERVERS that has a web ui but I'm looking for a client where you can log into a web ui, tell it to connect to a specified server and download a file, and then log off the ui and it will continue in the background. Kind of like sabnzbd is for nzb files.

If you really want to you can even get a full blown desktop experience on ipcop/smootwall

Its not something I would advise. I would never run anything but a firewall on a firewall. Every application you add to it is another hole in the wall and ftp is normally one of the most dangerous ones.
