iPhone 12 Rumours & Release Date

Got a SMS from Vodacom saying the device I requested is out of stock. I ordered 08:30 Friday morning.

Telkom has the iPhone 12 Pro 128GB for R1199 x24 months, which equates to R28,776. Still higher than the R23,999 cash price, but justifiable with the 3GB freeme package I guess.

MTN however, has the 12 Pro 128GB for R1159 x36 months which equates to R41,724!

How does MTN justify such daylight robbery!!!

I was at an MTN store yesterdy, the lady helped me also said she had no idea what MTN was thinking. Was told new prices would be made available on release day (18th). Then she showed me the stock sheet. Not sure if for the store or for the whole of MTN, but they had just over 100 devices coming in. No Pro models, only the 12 and the mini :O

I picked up a silicon case and screen protector for the 12 mini I've ordered. Sitting beside my 11 it is smaller of course and feels tiny in hand, but not as much as I thought it would be.

Weird... Outright purchase or contract?

I got the vetting approved sms, then an order received sms and finally an sms this morning to say I should expect a call within the next 72 hours to confirm.

I placed my order at 2PM yesterday but on completion of the online application I was informed that should there be no stock my order would be placed on back order.

Upgrade. I got all those messages as well. I called and apparently those messages go out as there is no stock available currently as its a pre-order so once stock arrives it will go out. Will have to wait and see.

Telkom's deal isn't terrible. Vodacom and MTN however...

Aren't Vodacom's offers about the same as Telkom? Example:
iPhone 12 Pro 128gb on uChoose Flexi 230 is R1209 pm vs R1199 pm on FreeMe 3gb
iPhone 12 Pro Max 256gb on uChoose Flexi 230 is R1409 pm vs R1399 pm on FreeMe 3gb

Vodacom deals are 36 months. Where as Telkom deals are 24 months.

Big difference.

Exactly. Vodacom and MTN are taking the p*ss.
Bloody disgrace the prices.

My bet is they simply make the prices up because they can and they know the guy that will take it either doesn’t care about the prices and never even looks at his invoices because the amount is small change to him.

Or they know the guy that takes the contract doesnt have the 28k to spend in one transaction or they are corporate phones where the company pays a large portion of the contract cost.

Or get the iPhone 12 Pro 128GB from the iStore for R1049 over 23 months. That's R17,597 cheaper than MTN!!
Or any credit card for that matter with a 24month budget facility would still work out way cheaper than network deals.

If people begin to give the networks the middle finger they will have to start doing better on price.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. I am "out of contract" on MTN. So free to cancel whenever - I just need them to move me to pre-paid so I can keep my number.

I'd probably not go for the Pro though. I don't take a lot of photos on my phone where I need the extra features. The Lidar is cool, but not useful to me.

Might look at the Mini due to it's size being the only difference from the regular 12.

Don't really understand the budget facility. My limit on FNB is half the price of the device as well. How exactly does Budget work? Might give FNB a call on Monday

Where did you see their pricing? Having a look now and can't see pricing for the new phones on contract.

Edit: Nvm - I see it now.

From Absa website, think it explains it. Should be more or less the same with all others.
  • When you make a payment selecting the budget(extended terms) repayment facility, you are choosing to pay the purchase amount back over a selected period of time in set instalments.
    • The minimum repayment percentage applicable to straight payments will not apply. The budget transaction amount is divided by the number of months selected, and every month your credit card payment due will be the sum of the budget amount/transaction repayment premium (plus the associated interest) plus the minimum repayment amount on the straight facility.
    • The minimum amount for a budget transaction on an Absa Credit Card is R300.
    • You can choose a term between 3 and 60 months (3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48 and 60) when the transaction is set up via a merchant or Absa card division, and 6 to 48 months when you structure the transaction via Absa online banking.
    • Interest on the budget transaction is charged from day one.
    • Your credit facility is allocated overall between your straight and budget transactions. For budget transactions – the full purchase amount of the budget transactions is deducted from your total available credit facility.

I'm tempted to pick up a 12 Pro Max from Telkom...looks tempting.
