Hi all,

I know in the past it is quite easy to use your iPhone as a 3G modem if you jailbreak it. It seems that this is no longer necessary. Has anyone actually tried using their iPhone 3G as a modem without jailbreak, on Windows that is?

I'm particularly curious about the Vodacom network...

Here is a how-to, however it never mentions Windows at all:

Yep used it and it works awesome.

Gotta use the iphone.vodacom.za APN as far as I know, and your phone must be enabled for it from Vodacoms side. Then the tethering option will appear. I had it disappear on mine once, but reset settings and it came back.

If you're not on Vodacom, you can try the fix limnos posted in the social group.

Alright so now, apparently, the v3.1 firmware disabled tethering. Can anyone confirm this?

EDIT: I found some international articles stating that 3.1 has disabled tethering for some networks. However, I found two South African articles that confirms it still works with Vodacom (MTN is slightly more cumbersome). And now you confirm it as well.. I don't actually have an iPhone, I'm just helping a friend out that needs to make a purchase but he doesn't want to buy a 3G modem.

I think the techie's at the vodacom store are fail, they probably fed him false information or dont know what they are doing.

They Are always a fail, was watching a iphone video on youtube last night and the service from AT&T looks awesome, they got qualified iphone assistants to guide you through the process for buying one its really cool, but i suppose we also good techies.....they just MIA till further notice :P

Stupid question, but does tethering (iphone as 3g modem) work with both windows and mac on vodacom? A friend is asking.

Don't have an iphone, so i wouldnt know.

Yes works with both, you'll need to install itunes for the iphone lan driver.

It also works on ubuntu 9.10 (bluetooth only) if you install the bluez compatibility.

Thanks aqua, does it have to be jail broken, and what happens when you need repairs?

Does not need to be jailbroken tethering must just be enabled.

If you need repairs send it to vodacom, you can just do a restore before sending and it will be a fresh iPhone again.
