Hi

Can someone please help me with some basic info on the iPhone ?

I don't know anything about it, but it is available on my contract at the moment. So I'm considering it. I have been a Nokia supporter since the 1610 ! But feel that it's time to move on, as there are no Nokias at the moment that I'm interested in.

I really only want a fun phone ! So I want to be able to call, sms, mms, take photos, play music, surf internet, check gmail, games and fun applications !

I've seen some fun applications like a cat or something that mimics everything you say into the phone and purrs when you scratch it, etc. Are these apps easy to find and install ? Does it cost much ? Same applies to the games ?

I've heard somewhere that Apple Apps and games are only available in $$ ! Is this true ?

What is "Jailbreak" that I keep reading of ?

Thanks
Any advice will be most welcome !!:):)

3GS? Why not the 4?

The iPhone is really fun. Good choice in that respect. Tons of games and apps. What you do is get a US iTunes account. Then buy an iTunes gift voucher for like $20. Then you can buy Apps and stuff - most of them are $1-5 which is really cheap.

Check out this post. It's got instructions for creating a US iTunes account in it. Easy and free!

What is Jailbreaking? Well the only distribution channel allowed by Apple is the App Store. If you Jailbreak, you can do things to your iPhone which are not allowed by Apple. You can also pirate apps that way. Although if you can afford an iPhone I say buy the apps but that's just my humble opinion.

iv got myslef a 3gs and works like a charm, will never go back to another phone (brand wise) But the amount of apps you get is crazy on the iphone, loads of them, so def a fun phone to have. Iv got myself a US account for Itunes and the app store, took me all of 10min to setup and i just buy vouchers online at a local site with my credit card.

If you looking to jailbreak your phone, this is a little more complex and is all dependant on what iOs version you are running, 3.x is easy to jailbreak but you dont get all the fancy features of iOs4, but chatted to a mate yesterday and he has his iphone iOs4.x jailbroken using green poison or something to that sort, so there are hacks out for the new iOs version as far as i know, so basically you dont have to get a iTunes account in the states and you wont even have to pay for anything if you get it jailbroken...

good luck!

Where to start..?

As per your "specs", call, mms, SMS and the rest, iPhones are awesome. Other than the phone stuff, I'm running 16 gigs of music and 9 gigs of apps right now... I've had 3 generations of the phones and I'll only be getting iPhones in future.

The apps will blow you mind... There are something like 300k apps in the app store... Check MyBB, there are one or two great threads for the best iPhone apps. I'm loving the HD games right now... Better than a PSP IMO.

The apps are sold in US$, even in the SA app store, but there are thousands of free apps and other than apps like some GPS apps which are around $70, most apps are pretty much 99c (unless they have a sale).

Jailbreaking allows you to install apps that either aren't available in the iTunes store or have been cracked (again, there are plenty MyBB threads discussing Jailbreaking as well as cracked apps).
Jailbreaking also allows you increased access to your phone and it's functionality.

iPhone FTW, Nokia not so much...

Piece of advice: If all you're after is the cool apps, get the new iPod Touch 4th generation. I got one for R1700, it's like an iPhone 4 without the phone bit. Really brilliant for games and stuff.
