Ok, so i am a real moron,

In order to help me you are going to have to type really slowly so it does not confuse me.

i bought a 2nd hand iPhone 3gs today.

When i bought it, it was working fine (no sim inserted)

The guy told me that it had been "Jailbreaked"

I then realised all his messages and contacts were still on the phone after i left, so i did a "device reset" to clear the data.

Now the unit wont boot up properly, it starts , but the little flashy circle thing just hangs.

I got hold of the the chap who sold it and he said i need to re jailbreak it and it is simple.

he forwarded me this link, and told me to download the file.

http://mobiclue.com/ios-4-direct-download-iphone-3g-3gs-ipod-touch-2g-3g-ipsw-links.html

Once downloaded, i need to start itunes, connect the phone, push the menu button and power button at the same time till i see an itunes logo,
Then i need to hold shift+click on restore, point to the file i downloaded and it should be sorted.

Ok, so here are my problems...

1. i use itunes 10, and when i plug in the iphone it does not pick up the phone
2. when i hold down menu and power, i dont get an itunes logo, i just get the same little apple and its infuriating circle that hangs.

I really wanna use my new toy, but at the moment its a little useless paperweight....and its all my fault.

H E L P!!!

Ok, turns out if i was a bit more patient and held the buttons for a few more seconds, it works

Now, on a seperate note, i have a Vodacom Contract that came with my blackberry bold (blackberry 100 - is the name of the contract)

If i put this same sim in my iphone, will my on device browsing still be free?

oik, we still have a problem, i put the phone in DFU Mode (the itunes logo came up)

I then selected the file i downloaded

itunes extracted the software, and then gave me a message saying it was contacting apple.

Then it brought up an error saying " The iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error occured. (3194)"

With two buttons - ok and more info

What the hell???

Hi Splinter, i got it into RECOVERY mode (not restore) follwoing your instructions, but i get the same error.

Should i rather download os 3.1.2?

That would probably be because apple only allows restoring to the latest firmware, unless you had SHSH blobs saved for the previous firmware.

Assuming the guy before you saved these on the Cydia servers, What you can do is edit your hosts file to redirect to the Cydia update server instead of Apples and then restore to the firmware.

Otherwise, simply press restore instead of shift+restore and you'll be restored to the latest firmware.

You can always try that hosts file trick later If you wish.

Excuse my ignorance, will that then take the phone back to its "out of the box" software/state?

Then i can jailbreak later once its working and up and running?

No, that will take the phone to the latest firmware version that Apple have released i.e 4.1

Then you can just jailbreak that with Limera1n or Greenpoison (google)

You should be on the latest firmware anyways as it's jailbreakable.

Ok, i think i get it,

Its not going to be the original out of box software, but rather a clean version of the latest available.

I followed the instructions and it took me to a user license agreement, i accepted and it is now "Downloading 1 item) it is currently at 84 minutes and climbing.

i assume once done, the update runs and my phone is brand spanking new and works?

(By the way, heaps of thank you's for the help.)

AAAH Crap.

It gets to 40mb of the download and brings up this message -

"there was a problem downloading software for the iphone. an unknown error occurred (9006)"

What now???

Ok, i clicked "refresh" and it looks like its carrying on, probably a connection issue. Will keep doing that until download completes i supppose.

No worries :)

Yeah let that complete and it should restore i.e wipe the phone and install the latest firmware version onto the phone.

Then once it's up and running you can jailbreak it with those tools I mentioned.

You can always manually download the firmware somewhere else if you want or using a download manager, and then use that shift+restore method and selecting the firmware file.

Here's the direct link for 3GS 4.1 firmware:

fxit_man is correct you can not install 3.1.2 and will have to load 4.1. Also use the link he provided if you dont succeed with downloading it vie itunes.

Just dont stress, its quite difficult in these situations but it is not possible to brick a iphone without being able to get it working again...

Except if it's network locked, and there's no unlock for iOS 4.1. Dev-Team said they're waiting for 4.2
