So please tell me how to put it on my phone once i have downloaded the direct download?

ok i have got the direct download already i just cant install it please help with THAT!

from bwana's link, do the following

Once you download the ipsw file, you can install it manually by going to iTunes, then hold “Shift” key and click on “update” button. Locate and select iOS 4.1 IPSW file. Now let the iOS 4.1 install complete.

Just some info for you to keep in mind. When you restore or upgrade using the downloaded file, itunes runs a check online to register the firmware - if it's not the latest version, then you will be unable to install it through itunes (without some workarounds). So as soon as 4.2 is out, I think your 4.1 firmware downloads will be relatively useless.

That's why you save your SHSH blobs with tinyumbrella. It sorts that whole issue out and you can downgrade, but you have to have saved the blobs.

Apple don't allow iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad users to downgrade their firmware. iTunes checks online with an Apple server, sending a unique identifier for your phone called an SHSH blob and only allows you to restore firmware once it's checked.

To get around this use an app called tinyumbrella. It's available for Windows and Mac. Then click on save SHSH. It will save you SHSH blobs for that specific iPhone at that specific firmware.

Then in future you can restore your iPhone back to that firmware again. To do so click "start TSS server" in Tinyumbrella, disconnect from the internet and it will fool iTunes and you can downgrade. However if you upgrade without having saved your blobs you are stuck.

If you ever jailbreak, and go to Cydia, there's a button that says "make my life easier" - it also does the same thing for you.
