I agree with @unskinnybob. I have a 3GS and the 4G doesn't really offer anything that I need. The 3GS is still fast enough. For people with older models like normal 3G and down, would seriously recommend upgrading.

+1

Oh, and you'll always win the "spot the dufus" at any party with your cover on your phone. Real men don't use covers on phones....it's GIRLY.
What a completely retarded statement! You obviously don't have an iphone! Also girls dig knowing that you are pro protection, you have more of a chance getting her with protection on than without :P

Most iphones have got covers on,and the people that dont are bloody stupid!

Can't wait for the Galaxy S though... Funny, I read an article on the iPhoney 4 release date and get good news about the Galaxy S! :p I wonder when "soon" would be to expect a launch announcement... Probably in a month or 2, considering how long they've taken to get it released thus far!

I've had my iPhone 3G for almost two years now and the most "protection" it ever had, was a Gelaskin at the back.

A lot of my friends have iPhones and not one of them use a cover on their phones. Just makes it very difficult to slide it in and out of your jeans pocket.

I have had my iPhone 3G for 2yrs and can honestly say i find no fault with it and it is the best mobile i have had (and only ever used a cover when backpacking:o) I cant wait to get the 4G! Instead of waiting for an upgrade i think ill use the insurance ive been paying for. Gotta find out what it covers first...

What good timing. My upgrade is due 1 October

More importantly though,
* when is the iPad hitting our shores?
* will it come with a data contract subsidy

I have a iPhone 3G. I can wait a bit longer. I want the iPad 3G/WiFi but I want a local warranty

I WAS very exited about the iPhone 4, planning to upgrade to that and handing my 3G on to my wife. However, iOS4 have turned my once loved 3G into a steaming pile of frustrating crap that I won't visit on my poor wife!

I am patiently waiting for Apple to fix it before I am due for an upgrade. If they don't fix it by then (or at least revert us back to 3.1 which worked beautifully) I will rather go for an HTC Desire.

It does some things better than the iPhone 4 and some worse, but on average, I'd say it's on par. I do like the much less restrictive app marketplace and it has some awesome apps that you will never find on an iPhone due to Apple's restrictive policies on apps (ie. Locale - check it out!)

Time will tell...

How is this a confirmation of a launch date? Date ? I see no date. Simply an assumption of when stock is "expected" to arrive. Do not trust anything Vodacom says, even if it is coming from the CEO. They have given us false promises in the past with this whole iPhone ordeal.

I'm still trying to figure out what "Pre-registration" means…

Why not save money and buy basically any of the other smartphones on the market, they all do the same thing :P

Why not make your own with a roll of dental floss and a box of suppositories?

Here's an easy to use guide on how to downgrade to iOS 3.1.3. Hope it helps.

If it doesn't, then at least you get some experience hacking phones. As I understand it, with Android, that's going to be a daily occurrence.

My problem is that less and less apps will support 3.1 unless Apple makes that the official "last" OS the 3G. For now (as mentioned in the post after yours) I got back a bit of my phone by turning off spotlight. That is a real pity as spotlight was one of the features I used most since it's introduction. But I guess features such as phoning, answering phone calls, opening the phone book and sending text messages takes precedence above that!

One of my developers and my brother in law both have HTC Desires and I have had the opportunity to "play" extensively with both their phones. The phones are really impressive and IMO the first phone to really compete with the iPhone (from my subjective point of view).

They had very little problems so far except for the one phone had to be reinstalled from scratch after he tried to upgrade to Android 2.2 while having internet connection problems. But then again, I had to go through that with my iPhone too after one install. With a backup it's irritating, but not a train smash.

I'm a technological "tolerant" user (I even managed to work with Vista for a year and accept and work around it's quirks), but this Phone is now pushing even my limits. And I know it's not isolated, I personally know a few (very unhappy) 3G owners and Apple's forum has a thread-naught of whining 3G users.

That's the price we pay for using devices that outlast their 2 year contracts. I look at this in a wider context of consumer electronics. Having said that, I still think it's impressive that these devices have the ability to become more useful, the older they get (at least when considering the updated features included in successive OS upgrades).

I played with a Desire a couple of weeks ago. I could see the attraction, but I still think I've got the better overall solution with an iPhone.

All phones have their quirks. Production quality is improving, no matter what antenna-gate detractors say.

Oh, I agree. My girlfriend's 3G became a beast with 4.0. Too bad I didn't know about the spotlight settings "fix" because she doesn't use the spotlight feature anyway. Still, I find it a strange reason not to get an iPhone 4.

I have one. I stood in a queue in Edmonton, Alberta, and bought the 32GB one cash, for CA$817 including taxes. It was an upgrade from my 3G, and the screen resolution and camera alone was enough to convince me. The rest is just gravy. Very very nice gravy, mind you. And boy, it's quick.

Only issue I've noticed, and it's annoying as hell but really easy to fix, is the battery life with push email enabled. Drains in a day. With push turned off, I get three to four days, and I used to charge my 3G every night. Also, in Canada I am on a 3G-only network, so I have to leave that on as well.

Even on 1%, I was making calls. Gotta say, it's a great upgrade for me.

If I'd bought the 3GS instead, it would have been a harder sell, I'll grant you. But if you're with an older one now, get the new iPhone 4.

P.S. The signal does attenuate if you hold it "just so", but not call-dropping attenuation. I strongly believe the signal strength makes all the difference. I'm on Solo, which is a Bell subsidiary, and the signal is strong almost everywhere I go.

P.P.S. iOS 4 muti-tasking is not true multi-tasking. Most of the apps that are "open" are not really, they're just sitting there. The few apps that are enabled for MT are not that heavy on battery either. Just push emails was the big drain, as I mentioned above.

I too have an Apple 3G with iOS4
My phone was slow but I have sorted it.

Just turn off Spotlight Search in your general settings and it speeds up.

iPhone signal issue

People should take note that the iPhone dropping signal issue is only really a US problem.

European newspapers have basically said that in europe the signal dropping issue is non existent. Considering that we have a really good cellphone network compared to the US, we should be totally fine.

Also in terms of not using covers... I've had my 3G now for over two years, never used a cover, but after some shocking drops I've had over the last few months, I'm going to cover up 4 as soon as I get it. Big thumbs up for the 3G taking horrific bouncing drops on asphalt and coming out unscathed.
