iPhone 4 Home Button Issue

I'm trying to fix an iPhone 4 with an erratic home button. Sometimes it works perfectly, other times you have to push really hard to get a response. I have tried various steps including calibrating, pushing it up with the charger, turning the phone while holding it down, but it doesn't seem to solve it.

Is my next step to replace the home button? It seems rather a complicated task to do: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+4+Home+Button+Replacement/3144

Reason I'm asking is because I recently purchased an iphone 4 from mtn online (during that crazy promotion when it was selling for R1249 for the 16gb) and this phone is also suffering the same symptoms with the home button also erratic at times. When I took the phone in to mtn it worked fine but as soon as I got home it was sticky.

Might be dirt. Try using a drop or 2 or medical alcohol to clean it.
