iPhone 4 still worthwhile?

So, I can upgrade my one contract and want to get (another) smartphone. I already have a super-awesome Galaxy S that's been flashed to hell and back. Getting a Galaxy S2 would just be more of the same for me - I'd end up putting MIUI on it and have both phones looking and acting exactly the same, which is pretty pointless. As much as I love Android, I want a new toy to play with. I can get a decent deal on an iPhone 4 from Vodacom, but seeing as the ever elusive iPhone 5 might be just around the corner, is it still a worthwhile upgrade? Looking at getting the white one, if I do get one...

Oh, and please don't suggest a Crapberry. I.will.never.get.one.

The new iphone is so near....u might as well wait
That was my suspicion. The interwebz doesn't seem to have a specific date for availability (except for the end of Sept / beginning of Oct window), not to mention good old ZA. How long would we have to wait for the 5 to come to ZA once it's been launched in the US?

The 4 is an awesome phone, especially if you like jail breaking it and changing things.

It will compliment your droid nicely.

I would probably end up jail breaking it, seeing as my SGS was rooted the week I first got it and got its first custom ROM installed the following week. :p The ROM-flashing has been a weekly ritual for me now for about a year. Maybe I can give the poor thing a rest for a month or so while I ravage the iPhone.

But the question still stands: is it still worthwhile getting a 4 with the 5 just around the corner? I'm guessing the price of the 5 will be considerably higher and the deal I'm getting from Vodacom really is quite good on a 16GB iPhone (white or black).

Yea I'm not sure that paying all that extra for the 5 when it comes out will be worth it. Besides the hype you will have to wait until they bring out the new jailbreak for it.

I'm the opposite from you. I have had the 3g, 3gs and now 4. I have a HTC desire but its a little low on oomph. I think my next phone in November will be the new Galaxy.

I will go for the Galaxy S2 the hardware is more than enough to make any geek get a e-boner :P

I suspect the iPhone 5 will launch locally mid to late November but that really is a guesstimate.

Software is pretty much standard and compatible with either the 4 or the 5 so no gain to be had there but the 5 should incorporate a 8mp camera vs the 5mp camera of the 4. The A5 processor is scheduled for the iPhone 5 too and that's quite a significant upgrade.

Aesthetically there's been a lot of speculation about potential changes in the form of a slightly bigger screen and a back to rounded form factor. Not entirely sure of the outcome in this regard though.

The bottomline, you still getting an incredibly competent product in the form of the iPhone 4. It's a top quality device and still very relevant. If the deal available is a sweet one, go for it. You won't be disappointed.

But on the other hand, a little patience could be richly rewarded

Wait for the iPhone 4S/5 but remember to be very patient as iPhones take 4 more months after US launch to rich Malemaland :D

hell no wth all the new phones out who would waste their time and money on IPHONE unless you have been sucked into the spell

I'm currently forcing myself to hold out and wait for the iPhone 5 - Apple's release cycle is so bloody short that it makes sense to get the device at the beginning of the cycle!

Coming from a droid with flashing and customisation you are setting yourself up for disappointment if you decide for the iPhone. I also have a Galaxy S which has been flashed to the moon and back. Bought the iPad 2 having high expectations but was so disappointed. I sold it again after about one week. I think the same may happen to you if you decide to go for the iPhone. You'll get bored after about a day, even if you jailbreak. I played around with the S2 and it is quite a step up from the S. Well worth the upgrade for the bigger screen, camera and flash, otherwise why not try the Sensation? Also don't forget icecream sandwich is around the corner so that should keep you occupied and interested

Do you really want to spend the next 2 years with a phone that is so close to End of life? Don't see what the iPhone fuss is about in the first place though. My next phone will run Ice Cream Sandwich +.

The iPhone 4S/5 should not be too bad, but now there's a dual-core Samsung Galaxy @ 1.5Ghz + 4.5'' display and a 3D one coming soon.....I'd rather wait.

So close and if you buy the iPhone 4 now, you're stuck with it for 2 years. I say no.

The more u wait the more new phones will be launched.
You'll end up waiting and waiting . . .

I'm really not too concerned over the hardware of the devices(s) as, like I said, I own an SGS. I've played around on the SGS2 quite a bit as well (2 colleagues each have one, after my recommendation) and there really isn't anything to get me all moist. I rarely play games on the phone and IF I do, I doubt having a beast of a phone would make Angry Birds, Mini Squadron or Myth Defense any better... There isn't really any feature on any 'droid currently that gets me all giddy at the moment. I love my SGS to bits and would continue playing with it and flashing new firmware, until the day it decides to give up the ghost, which I don't foresee to happen during the next year or so.

I really wanted to get an iPhone just for the sake of having something different. My other option is a WP7 phone, but I really don't want to go down that lane right now (coming from WinMo 5/6 a couple of years ago). I have a contract expiring each year, so my next upgrade is due June next year. As far as I've read, iOS5 works fine on the iPhone 4, so as long as I can stay up to date with firmware on the phone for at least another year or 2, I'm happy. For me it's not about bragging rights in having the latest device, it's about just having a new toy to play with for another 9-10 months whilst I wait for my other contract's upgrade cycle to lapse. :p

So again I ask: is it worthwhile getting a 4 now and would the 5 really make such a huge difference in everyday use? I'm not a big photo fanatic, so the upgraded camera doesn't make me excited in the least.
