Hey guys

I recently got an iPad through the FNB deal, and the time has come for me to upgrade my cell. Now these 2 phones fall within my budget. I personally have the feeling that the SG2 is the better phone, but I do feel a bit of brand loyalty, and like the idea of pairing iPad and iPhone.

Anyone been in a similar situation? What would the pros and cons be of each? I am a jailbreak supporter, so it does open up a few options for the iPhone.

Thanks very much folks

Seeing as the iPad is just an oversized iPhone, why not get the SGS2 and have the best of both iOS and Android? I have an SGS1 and an iPhone4 and can honestly say Android is just more fun...

Hmm, between the SGS2 and the iPhone 4, I would say definitely the SGS2. How far out is the 4s from your budget?

There's also a Samsung Note to consider. Its a bit bigger, but still fits into a pocket.

Also the Nokia Lumia which may be cooler than both.

The iPhone 4 8gig is R269 with R100 airtime. SG2 is R299 with R200 airtime. iPhone 4s 16gig is R499 with R200 airtime.

Totally not worth the R200 more a month for me..

The Note isn't an option. Don't want something that big.

The problem I have with the SG2 is that it's quite big and too light. Anyway, I see that your budget is around R300pm.
Why don't you consider the iPhone 4s for R299.00 but it's with Vodacom and not MTN

For the sake of experiencing different things, I would go with the SGS II...
It's not as though you are sacrificing anything if you do... you are only gaining a different experience.

For the sake of continuity I would go with the iPhone 4.
One of the main reasons I won't be going the Android route is that I've got a ton of apps that would either be costly or impossible to replace.

@VG008, that's with no bundled airtime or anything..

Ok so Sandman and Demon cancel each other out.

Bwana, that's something I thought. But most of the apps I have got for the past few days have been free, thanks to the whole jailbreak thing.

iPhone 4S. Android is "fun" but after a while annoying. iPhone is nicer

I've got an iPad 1 and recently got a note. By all accounts the SGS2 is a baby version. Wife has an iPhone 4. All awesome devices, in all likelihood you'll be happy with any of them. When ICS upgrade comes in the next couple of months for the SGS2 its gonna be a huge upgrade

This is going to sound totally odd especially coming from an Android fan.

Get the iPhone. Seeing that you already happy with the iPad in other words the iOS ecosystem stay within the ecosystem. At least this way if you want to buy an app its for both your phone and tablet.

I have an iPhone and iPad 1st gen and the only reason I went for an Android phone was because I did not like the closed ecosystem. This in turn made me buy a Android tablet as I hated having to buy some apps twice esp games, and now my iPad is being neglected as a net result even when its not a bad device and in some cases better supported than say Android tablets(for Now).

Rofl.

Please elaborate.

I've had my Desire for 2 years and I'm not quite sure what you mean by annoying?

The weakest part of that phone was the limited space for apps.

Now I got the RAZR so that's no longer an issue.

The big win with Android is that not one person's phone will look the same as the person next to him/her.

All the iphones out there, from the first to the last, looks exactly the same. A bunch of apps on a home screen.

BORING BEYOND BELIEF.

I want my phone to have my feel and customization to it, cos it's my phone.

Seeing that he is willing to jailbreak and go ape, I dont think its really a big issue as you can mod iPhone as seen http://www.ithemesky.com/

The only real question is if you can stand the restrictive ecosystem in the crappy every app for themselves attitude ala no Unified file system. Or the lack of real multitasking and no running selective services and suspending applications is not multitasking. Or the fact that you can not exactly download/copy an mp3 and add it to your playlist. In my case its a hell NO but then thats why I use Android as my main phone.

And as soon as you've jailbroken it, Apple rolls out a new update and it's the whole process over again. Just don't have time for this nonsense anymore.

On my old iPhone 3G, the firmware updates came in at 320MB, so if you're on a 2GB monthly 3G data deal, time to upgrade that as well, if you want to keep up while Apple and Jay Freeman battle each other.

The OTA updates are deltas. That means that the updates contain only the minimum data needed to upgrade, instead of the complete operating system. For the 5.0.1 update for a GSM iPhone 4, the over-the-air update weighed in at 44.6MB; the full download via iTunes was 790.7MB.

I had this debate with myself for 3 months and finally went with the iPhone 8gb at 269 a month. Over the past 4 years or so I've been paying about R800 a month on phone contracts. Now I just want a phone that works with minimum issues and pay as less as possible.

Sensible. And how you enjoying it?
