My wife's contacts just miraculously disappeared. She's tried resetting network settings (as suggested on Apple forum), also closed all apps and restarted phone but nothing is working. When she uses whatsapp, it just lists the numbers of the people she was chatting to but earlier, when she was checking her phone's settings, the whatsapp pop-up showed ny name and not the number. Is this an iOS bug? She's on 5.1.1. Going to the dialer and contacts just shows nothing.

Tia.

Really strange - doesn't she have a backup anywhere, even on gmail?

There is an app in the store that I have seen blamed for making people's contacts disappear. I forget it's name but it's one of the ones used to transfer contacts or something.

Go to contacts and check top left for a groups menu. Make sure all groups are selected.

Whatsapp broadcasts the profile name that you enter into it on your phone through the notifications system on the other phone.

It looks up against the local address book once inside the App.

Then I'm really sorry to say I don't have any ideas. :o

What did she plan to do if she ever broke the phone or it was lost/stolen?

No problem. Thanks anyway :)
To answer your questions, I honestly don't know. She was probably just under the assumption that it will never break or very stolen.

Hmmm, thanks for the info but I don't think she has any such apps installed.

I'll ask her to check this now. Thanks man.

Sandman, she says she doesn't have that option on the contacts screen. She's not with me at the moment, so I can't check.

The same thing happened to me after doing some app updates, about 2 weeks back. Luckily I had a backup, but I tried a dozen fixes before using my backup and found nothing.

Mercurial, tell your wife to go to contacts then, at the top left of the screen it will say "Groups" - tell her to tap that button and make sure there is a tick next to "All Groups"

If she gets the contacts back - make sure you setup a backup to iCloud or Gmail for them!

As suggested by sand_man. The OPs iPhone is running 5.1.1 - iirc contact groups was introduced in iOS6.

Yip, correct, bwana. It was working fine one minute and then suddenly just vanished the next. She definitely didn't update any apps.
