iPhone 4S ios 6 ( USA ) help pls

I have just received a iPhone 4S from the USA and my friend had his carrier unlock the phone. However it still will not allow me to connect to South African Cell network. Please give me some advise on how I can get the phone working on our Networks. I would Jailbreak it , but it's a 4s and has 6.o software.
Any advice would be great, thanks

Hi Gambit,
Thanks so much for your help , eventually got the phone working. My friend gave the incorrect IME number and when he gave the correct one , it un locked. Working now , great.
