Hey guys, I am on MTN contract and wanna buy iPhone 5 for cash. Istore says their phones are sold at cash price but will only warrant it if used with 8ta sim only. So if I buy it at 10k I loose warranty cos I use MTN. Is this a fact or some bull. If true, then where can I buy MTN stock for cash?

There's no way they can tell what sim card you use. Get the phone and use your MTN card. If something goes wrong, take it back and say you were using an 8ta sim.

I'm pretty sure they can't force you to use one service provider over another. It's your phone. Wtf!

That's what I thought. These people know nothing honestly. It's so frustrating dealing with idiots.

Just be careful .... I recently had a MTN claim rejected initially due to me using a different MTN sim in the phone other than the original MTN sim I bought it with. It was only after I asked them for proof of them sending me the terms and conditions of the contract that they realized they never sent it to me and they honored the claim.

Bottom line: I'm not sure this 'scare tactic' will sit well with the CPA but I suggest you rather play it safe than sorry. And for what it's worth .. If you're going to buy cash, you may ask well rather look at contract from Cell C. It works out only slightly more expensive (if you multiple the monthly amount by 24 for the 16GB phone) than the actual cash price of the phone and you get so much more value ...

The thing is I have contract already with MTN which I am happy with. I prefer to buy it cash cos I don't need another contract although it will be better and cheaper. It's just a matter of finding MTN stock for cash only.

I don't think MTN is able to tell you which SIM you had in the phone if its not theirs but they are able to tell you when you used the MTN SIM in the phone. So it may be a calculated risk ...

Yea I guess it will be. The other thing is do MTN have nano sims?

Yes the networks can do this and have before. But it only applies to the second half of your warranty. First year is manufacturers warranty, second year the network covers it.

So you are saying i can buy from vodacom and put a mtn sim in it and for the first year i will still be covered but the second year i may have issues.

All you need to do is put a 8ta sim in the phone, make sure it's activated, then remove 8ta sim never to be used again, insert MTN sim and continue. So long as 8ta have confirmation that the phone is activated on their network you covered.

It will not be active on their network.

Some SPs will not honour gaurantee if not active on their system for a minimum of 30 days...

You're so clever

As a standard they will say anytime you use a different sim you can void your warranty, but you can argue the manufacturer vs network warranty. The networks only ever use this if there is a reason they don't want to honour the warranty. So would be if it's an expensive repair or of your acting like a cock.
Remember ITC keeps records of every sim that's been in a phone so a once off registration won't help.
Buy like I said, the different sim policy is rarely used.

I see it from this point of view..

1. The networks will not give any sort of warranty on a phone that is not part of their stock. (So, this "Network warranty" doesn't apply here)
2. Apple gives all their products a 1 year warranty - (Unless you buy AppleCare, which extends it to 3 years )
3. Whoever told you that the warranty is void is you don't use an 8ta sim card in the phone, needs a slap and to be fired.

You buy the phone at a cash price. It's yours and you do what you like with it. You're not bound by any contract (Other than the warranty from Apple) and therefore you can use what ever sim card you like.

Its So Sad, when we walk into a store here in SA only to find out that they no Nothing about the products they sell. I assume they get trained but i am sure its by someone who knows nothing as well. Sad, Very Sad

Still irrelevant if you're buying one from the iStore which is not bound by a contract.
I agree, but lady at iStore told me they are forced by networks to sell cash phones with sim cards.
