iPhone 5: pros and cons

I have the iPhone 4, and absolutely love it! I have used Samsung, Sony (Android), and Nokia phones, and none of them have a UI that is as simple or as logical as iOS. As an engineer, I really appreciate the build quality of the hardware. I now have the new iPad and an Apple TV, and the seamless interaction between these devices is amazing.

I also love the fact that Apple control iOS, and pushes out updates simultaneously around the world. I hated the fact that Sony (in my case) could decide not to offer the latest version of Android for my 6 month old device. Never again. iOS 6 will be available for iPhones right back to the 3GS (some features are not included where the hardware can't support) - what other manufacturer supports a 3 year old device?

The iPhone 5 has the same iconic design as the 4 and the 4S, but has been improved in every way: bigger screen, but thinner, lighter and faster, with even better battery life. Unfortunately, my contract isn't up for renewal until the New Year, but I doubt I'll even look at another phone!

Got an iPhone 4 and won't be upgrading. Going prepaid from my Vodacom contract, then switching to Cell C. Save myself around R10,000 over two years. Now THAT is an "upgrade" :D

Quite frankly, this is the most used and yet least objective reason why iOS or OS X is better than other OSes.

I am literally scared of switching to OS X - it freaks the ibby jibbies out of me because I literally don't know where to start. Everytime I look at Apple device UIs, I am at sea. Apple knows that this is the reality for many people. No wonder they are advertising lessons in OS X.

If you are used to something, you will feel that it is easier and more user friendly than anything else. Drop in there you own biases and there you have it. Besides, it is the stuff made for the 'elite' judging from those prices so it can't be wrong.

got an iphone 4 will not be upgrading to 5. The Nexus range release date is in 5 November. Rumor has it they will be releasing 5 phones to mark there fifth anniversary of Android

As far as iPhone 5 pros and cons go: what I like about the iPhone 5 is how Apple, as the leaders of innovation, bought nothing new to the table, so they won't have anything to sue other companies over.

I know what you mean about OS X - I have also been scared to switch from the safety of Windows, but Windows 8 looks terrible from a desktop point of view, and I really don't like the direction Microsoft are taking. I feel like they are trying to copy the Apple ecosystem, and I respect their efforts, but why get the copy when you can get the original. I am seriously considering getting an iMac when the updates are launched, hopefully before the end of the year! Besides, learning a new OS can be fun!

Here in South Africa, as government’s spectrum allocation chaos rumbles on, the availability of LTE on the new iPhone makes absolutely no difference.

Huh? Exactly the opposite...

Hilton, just for a change, Apple and ICASA are on the same page. Given the ongoing delays in the deployment of LTE in 800/2600 in Europe and elsewhere (we are not unique, you know), Apple has looked at its product lifecycle and made a very smart decision to support the 1800 MHz LTE band for Europe on this version. That is just about what's possible in engineering terms currently for a phone with so many bands. Yes, that means that there are only a few operators that will support it, but that's the point - it's precisely the operators who are trying to get in ahead of the LTE curve that are re-farming and buying 1800 MHz spectrum (e.g. Everything Everywhere in the UK) who will get the iPhone. That means that they are going to push it like crazy, which is what Apple wants.

The situation is exactly the same in South Africa. All of the current LTE trials (including MTN and Neotel, for example) are on 1800 MHz. Why? Because ICASA hasn't got its act together to issue the 800/2600 spectrum. My guess is that this will happen about the same time as the mass deployments in this band in Europe, and of course Apple will support it - with the iPhone 6 (or maybe another version of the iPhone 5 next year), which you are really going to want to buy then...

For now, given that MTN has announced that it is launching LTE on 1800 MHz, just watch this space. Assuming they are friends with Apple, they will be driving the iPhone 5 like crazy for its LTE capabilities, just like EE in the UK.

Oh, come on. Spend a couple of hours in front of a Mac, and you will realise that you have been conned for most of your life by MS. I have never come across anyone who thinks it would be a good idea to downgrade back to Windows after they get a Mac... It just works properly. If you really want to be all at sea, try to do almost anything on Windows after you've used a Mac for a while...

If you want to get technical, it's a real operating system (underneath it's BSD Unix, with everything you'd expect from a standard Unix, and by far the best kernel, based originally on NeXT, with 20 years development added, without losing the essence - unlike MS, which has rewritten everything from scratch at least three times in the same period).

A lot like iOS, the UI in OSX has been built for humans, unlike much of the other stuff out there...

Apple is bargaining on that. Win 8 won't crash and burn the way Win Phone 8 is going to, but it's definitely trying to take users in a direction they don't want to go...

Not in any hurry, but for sure getting the iphone 5. Will wait until the initial mad rush is over and stock levels stabilise.

On another note, my pc is in need of an upgrade - sorely tempted to stick my neck out and go the OS X route.

iOS 6 looks rather dated and the design aesthetics look uncomfortable. No 720p screen is a major draw back compared to the competition. And it should have included NFC and Wireless Charging considering it's a premium phone.

If you wait a little longer, the iPhone 6 will be out and we will get a series of OMG moments again.

Volkwagen said years ago that the next generation of their cars was already in advanced planning when the current one had just been launched. We will soon have a Golf 7 and the 8 is taking shape in Germany. Would it not be similar for phones?

My friends who changed from a Windows PC to a Mac all said the same thing, they should have done it years ago

I guess it works for the average consumer, but I want the final say (and choice!) what goes into my personal computer.

The screen is 2 pixels short of 720p.

As for the dated aesthetics I agree 1000%. Jailbreaking is imperative. In fact as much as I love the brand and product, should they close the jailbreak loophole I would be very hard pressed to get the 5.

Windows dominates in the enterprise market, and W8 is targeted at the consumer. I think MS hope that people will be attracted to a phone and/or tablet that mirrors what they see on their PC, but I can see many people skipping W8, as it doesn't offer any compelling reason to upgrade. In the long term, this strategy might work, but in the meantime many people will switch to OS X.
