iPhone 5 to reverse Android surge?

Apparently not as you seem to be suggesting that Microsoft's dominance in the PC market was a result of Apple's closed ecosystem?
Mac lost out to MS because Apples OS ran on Apple hardware (macs), where Microsofts OS ran on almost anything. Unless you have another explanation for Mac losing so terribly against the PC?

Here let me help you

While it did briefly license some of its own designs, Apple did not allow other computer makers to "clone" the Mac until the 1990s, long after Microsoft dominated the marketplace with its broad licensing program. By then, it was too late for Apple to reclaim its lost market share and the Macintosh clones achieved limited success before being axed after Steve Jobs returned to Apple Computer in 1997.

...are...you...getting...my...point....now?

Ghoti, that was what worked well back then ... horisontal integration. Vertical integration works well now and that is why Apple is now making so much money, and MS not. Get that book I recommended.

The problem with comparing the original Apple Macintosh (1984) with iPads, iPhones, iPods etc today, is that the Mac was never anywhere nearly as popular as these iDevices are. They're already a huge success, while the Mac was pretty much a failure compared to the PC. Another difference is that Steve Jobs got kicked out in 1984, I wonder if that had any effect on the company?

Also it's not necessarily true that one company or OS necessarily dominates. It was the case for PC's, but has never been the case for Cell phones.

What amazes me is the amount of apple users that think android users choose this route because the cannot afford an apple.

There is this mistaken belief that everyone wants an apple but "settles" for an android.

Exactly ! My Sony Xperia Arc cost me more than what an iPhone 4 costs, but IMHO it is a much better phone !

And you don't have to jailbreak it to become functional.

I prefer the zen garden to the walled garden. ;)

Closed software system on a closed hardware system.

Same as with the PC`s. You are only meant to run apple approved apps on apples operating system on apples hardware. Due to this it lost against Microsoft, that ran most software on most hardware. Exact same thing with android.
That's not correct. Anyone can develop for OsX (all macs come with developer tools) and apple has no approval process unless you want to use the app store.

EDIT - I see you later acknowledged your error.

Smartphone OS market share seems to be wrong way around.

I am a total novice at finance but even I can tell that graphic is ridiculous. It means I wouldnt have made money if I invested in MS in 1984. lol.

Nothing wrong with stock prices on the... what it doesn't show is the stock splits see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stock_split

Sorry I was wrong that infographic says nothing of value.
Microsoft stock split 9 times on 2 for 1 and once did a 3 for 2 split
Apple only had 3 splits 2 for 1 to date, and none of that is properly reflected.

It might help to finish the thread before responding.... just a post or two further and you would have seen me admitting to that small error. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ndroid-surge?p=6362167&viewfull=1#post6362167

Again my point still stand even taking into account my small error on part of it.

EDIT: I see you finished reading the thread.

True.

We all know the specs of iPhone 5 more or less by now :

dual core A5 cpu
4'' IPS display
1 GB RAM
8MP camera
Power VR graphics
storage...16GB, 32GB or maybe 64GB

The same specs as the Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation.

But where it might become a global best seller again, is in the design. If it looks anything similar to the latest iPod Touch, then it will be the one to get. ;)

I suspect it will. The iPad 2 design has already shifted in that direction ... iPod Touch, only thicker. Jobs did however state that the current design was based on the famous Leica camera design and he would like for it to linger longer. If it is similar to the current design then I bet on a metal back (not glass).

Heh! I'm not even interested in the iPhone vs Android debate any longer - it's so obvious that Android will win this race on smartphones and tablets - Android has reached critical mass and will simply continue to snowball from this point onwards

Apple deserves utmost appreciation for 'creating' the modern smartphone and tablet market iPhone and iPad - they've made super profits off this - I want to see what's next 'cos that is the one thing you can count on - Apple is very innovative, closed - Yes, proprietary - Yes, stunning design - Yes - no one has come close in the last 10 years.

Love my Androids - Apple can't compete with the openness...

One thing that Apple has that Android doesn't is LOYALTY. And with the IOS5 on the way it will just reinforce that and even attract more people as activation of apple devices will no longer require iTunes.
APPLE PRODUCTS JUST WORKS.
I think
