iPhone 5 to reverse Android surge?

One thing that Apple has that Android doesn't is LOYALTY. And with the IOS5 on the way it will just reinforce that and even attract more people as activation of apple devices will no longer require iTunes.
APPLE PRODUCTS JUST WORKS.
I think

WTH are you smoking? if I just see some of the android comments in this forum not to even mention Engadget I would say Android is stocked up dam good in that department.

2 of my friends got android phones yesterday, instead of going the BB/iphone route.

So proud :D

You can't compare iphone to Android. How do you compare a phone to an operating system?

It's iphone vs Galaxy S, Desire HD etc..
and iOS vs Android.

Mac lost out to MS because Apples OS ran on Apple hardware (macs), where Microsofts OS ran on almost anything. Unless you have another explanation for Mac losing so terribly against the PC?
This is exactly the same situation as in the smartphone market? iOS on Apple and Android on almost every other phone?

Yeah except this time Apple aren't cocking it up like they did in the 80's

It's not so much about Apple doing things better now (as opposed to back then). It's a change in what works now vs what worked then. I mentioned this here in an earlier post: Vertical integration is now the way that works; back then it wasn't. Apple is now reaping the benefits of sticking to their model at times when it wasn't the most lucrative model. The horisontal model is not lucrative any more. Most people prefer a unified well defined, well developed, ecosystem. Geeks want freedom, but most don't care about that and put other things first (like a hassle free experience; things that just works out of the box and is simple to get working). Apple is hitting the nail perfectly at present ... and making more money than anyone else. Balmer said it would never work ... now they are trying to catch up but is caught between vertical and horisontal models with WP.

Vertical integration profits Apple not their poor customers.

It profits both. Apple get the money, and I get access to an excellent ecosystem/device/experience that works well with very little hassle. I pay money based on what I want - and believe I will gain - in return. Apple never ever forced my to give them a cent. Every accessory and app I buy I do because I want to do so.

Let me give an example: My wife is a Type 1 diabetic and must record her injections and food/water intake every day and submit her logs to the specialist every Monday. I gave my iPhone 4 to her a month ago and she quickly managed - without any assistance - to learn to know everything required to fully use the iPhone. She then discovered an app on the AppStore called Diabetes Buddy, installed it, tested it, and bought the full version. She now records everything in her phone immediately and e-mails the logs on Monday mornings. The app calculates everything that need to be calculated and display it on graphs. All the stuff she needs is there and it works beautifully. This app changed her life. No hassle. No-one required to show her how. It just works. That is what people want.

Yes, I know there will be apps like this on other platforms, but it is the way that this solution realised itself without any hassle/knowledge that makes Apple so good.

Look at Ontrack Diabetes in the Android market - you could probably do the same as easily on Android.

Just saying that iPhone doesn't offer anything unique.

In fact you could probably do this on my 2003 HP PDA - still a good device!

As I stated, there will be similar solutions on other platforms. The simplicity involved impressed me. One App Store, one search, immediate results, quick installation, perfect outcome, life changed. This is one example that highlights what Apple's whole ecosystem is about. No geeks required. Oops ... I'm now playing Angry Nerds ...

End of the day Price will decide who wins and who doesn't. Yes people want apps and features but its the price they can get that for that will decide.

PC Windows won against Mac, not because it was better or even that it came in different sizes, it won because of price, same with VHS vs Betamax, HD DVD vs Blue-ray. I would also see it the main reason why Android tablets do not sell yet(Volume) vs Ipad's purely because of price.

Us trend setters will select on values, be it design or function, but the man in the street wants a decent cheap phone that can run all kinds of fart apps, because his friends can, and yes we still in the trend setting phaze as world wide the dumb phone still rule. The PC world had the same experience back in 80's when Apples, Sinclair s, PC's and Commodores all tried to fight for that no 1 spot.

Joke is back in the day, IBM PC + Dos was a late comer as well.

It took me a few seconds to find that Diabetes App on the Android market - it is as simple and as quick - I have an iPod Touch 4G 32GB, I have actually stopped using it because it is more of a hassle than Android, mainly because of iTunes.

Android is actually the one that is quicker and easier!

Price had nothing to do with it...
;)

Well Jola, if it is as easy to find quality apps for Android as it is for Apple, and as easy to get into it all within minutes without any assistance, then great. The more phones that can help improve people's lives the better.
