The A6 is a dual core underclocked at 1.2, memory will be 1Gig max. So SIII beats the iphone in every department.

Remember that Android needs more processing power because it runs all your applications in a virtual machine, unlike iOS/MeeGo/WinMoPho which run natively compiled applications. Less CPU power equals longer battery life.
 
iOS is a less complex OS than Android so needs less horsepower. Android will need more and more horsepower as it ads complexity ... but that is what attracts me to it. "Project Butter" has however trimmed it down to do more with less.

Ah OK, I wouldn't have considered these as being part of OS complexity, but then it depends on where you draw the line between OS and UI, and it has become blurry.
Does Android's UI also run inside the virtual machine?

Agreed, with a mobile device this is a compromise that has to be made.

As we are dealing with different OS's a direct comparison between processors cannot be made. iOS requires less horsepower to do what Amdroid does. An iPhone with a lower spec processor will do the job well enough considering there are no widgets, live wallpapers and whatnot to keep live in Android's multitasking environment. Android is a bussy bee. iOS only works as/when needed.
