I am struggling to make the Touch ID (fingerprint) function work on my iPhone 5S...

Anybody else with the same problem? Or advice from people who got it to work?

Hoping the phone is not defective!

It should just work. You might have a defective device. Get it swapped out

You register a finger and you use said finger...that's the process.
Just make sure that you follow the instructions on the screen during the registration process. It will tell you to move your finger slightly and it also asks you to change your finger to a new position...so scan your finger sideways even. Remember, its trying to take your print from all the potential angles you might try to open the phone from. So keep that in mind when doing the registration. Don't put the phone on a table and register your finger and then try to open the phone with your finger at an oblique angle while holding it in your hand later.

Thanks guys...got it to work...jalaloedien's advice was helpful

I know other forums report a gradual degradation over time - i.e. it starts reading 1st time, less and less - but as of yet, I've yet to notice anything. I'm clearly a lazy SOB, but man - I really, really like the Touch ID... I check my phone plenty of times during the day, and not having to punch in my passcode, gives me oodles of joy.

Ja - I know. Too lazy to type 4 numbers. But hey. What can I say... :)

Bit pointless keeping the four number pin if you have Touch ID.

use a proper password instead.

Que?

Why would I need to upgrade to a more complex password, if I use TouchID *instead* of my pin?

Because your PIN is still the most common denominator and makes your phone incredibly easy to access.

Just a case of due diligence. You have the option for more security more easily so you might as well use it.
