I'm currently trying the Porteus distro, a derivative of Slackware 14 with LXDE desktop manager. I'd like to connect my iPhone, just to access photos and music.

Has anyone on here managed to mount an iPhone on Slackware/Slax and can help me with how it's done? I've got an idea of the packages required (libimobiledevice, gvfs, etc) but I come unstuck trying to compile the packages.

you need to install apples usb inception or how itunes communicates with apple hardware.
Apple have their own hardware inception drivers when it comes to loading music.
if you where using a pure slackware, you could use the source code found on slackbuild.org
for ifuse (and other listed software that would enable you to mount your ios device, so you can manage your music)

concerning pictures my ipad uses mtp to access pictures on the ipad, but i can only access pictures i have taken
with the camera... i don't know why i guess i have to ask apple why they are making it so hard to manage their devices
if you don't use osx or win lap/desktop since itunes is not available on linux

Where does the compile fail? Give some details and lets see if we can help.
This is the result of the libimobiledevice compile:

/snip
checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes
checking for libusbmuxd... no
configure: error: Package requirements (libusbmuxd >= 1.0.8) were not met:

No package 'libusbmuxd' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables libusbmuxd_CFLAGS
and libusbmuxd_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

I have checked the readme file for libimobiledevice and have downloaded the following via PPM, converted to modules and rebooted

libgnutls
libplist
libusbmuxd

I get the same result and I've got no idea whether I must compile libusbmuxd instead of converting it to a module.

Thanks Nolois
I've got a Windows box with iTunes on that I use to manage the phone but I spend most of my time on a Linux machine so it would be nice to be able to access my phone from that. I'm just a little surprised that it is still such an issue to mount an iPhone in Linux.
