Iphone: Get one now or wait for new one?

Yeah Mweb have the 8Gig, I checked it out, I was thinking of getting it on the Talk 130 @ R315 a month as I am looking for free minutes. Is that decent deal?

MWEB have it at R 315 for the Talk 130 ... I checked with them this morning and they said no, that wasn't on offer??? Anyone else can confirm MWEB has it on the Talk 130?

Erm I just phoned them literally 5 minutes ago, the application forms are sitting i my inbox as we speak and I am applying for the Talk 130 with a free iPhone.....So I would suggest phoning back and speaking to someone who knows what they talking about.

When the new model comes out, you can be sure the pay in will be back to R2500+ on a top contract. The cool thing is that the new OS will run on the old phones as well and I think the OS is where the most new functionality will be.

I think you are going to be looking more in the region of R3199 - R3999 pay in on a top contract. Not sure though. I know the 16GB on VC now is R3199 on most packages.

How much better do think the new gen iPhone is going be?

Well it's speculation at best but I think Apple will still make an 8GB phone OR if they follow their usual trend you will get a 16GB at the cost of the old 8GB etc. Just look at the recent iMac prices 24" costs what the old 20" cost.

At the moment there are very little details on the new phone. The new OS however is looking very good (I am testing the beta).

Makes me wonder if I should wait for the new phone to. Although I wont get a decent deal for quite sometime I rate. At least not a deal like Mweb have at the moment.

It might be worth the wait, but I am not sure if it will be worth the pay-in. All the current models will run the new OS once it comes out, so if you don't like forking out top dollar get the current model.

Ah ok, well if the current 3G will be able to run the latest OS then I might just get one now.....A deal like this I know I wont get on the new 3G.

Yes. Firmware updates will always be free. OS3 will be a simple update through iTunes.

That is nice to know - I deffinately think I should go for this deal then.

I have a question to iphone owners;

Opera mini is a life saver for browsing the web in queues, waiting rooms etc or to just quickly check mail or facebook. The clunky interface is offset by the fact that when loading a page with just text (i.e with pictures off), the average page size is 5 -15kb.
That means i browse for an hour sometimes and use around half an mb of data.

Is there anything like this on the iphone?
Whether its through the app store or via cydia or installer.
I usually jut need t read text, and the mobile view is more than adequate for this, no panning or zooming, just scrolling up and down.

I'd really like to know if there's perhaps an app or even a version of opera mini that handles web pages the same way..

thanks

Yes. It's called the Safari internet browser & it's da bomb!

You can surf the web as if you're using a laptop, cos you can zoom in/out of web pages with your fingers. ;)

On most/all of the iPhone contracts you get 250MB data free a month + you get roll over. I've got 388MB left for the month, use Safari browser heavily + News24, Facebook apps and have only used 68MB for the month - I know, it's pathetic....I'll try to improve on that figure. :)

*I wonder what is V3G's data usage on his iPhone per month.

Thanks for the reply,

If i get an iphone though, it'll be off contract, so i wont have a data plan. so the thing is, whats the monthly usage?
cos with opera mini, my monthly usage is about 20mb, even less when i'm at home alot cos then i just surf using wifi.
I know the iphone has wifi too, and i'll use that alot, but i wanted to know the data usage using 3g/gprs

and yes, i realise the safari browser is the best out there, but i was asking about a 3rd party browser that leaes out images and renders pages in a single column like opera mini.
The reason i'm looking into the iphone btw, is the better touch screen response, kinetic scrolling, and a little app called epocrates which i used to have on my old palm.
it's a medical app which works a treat. oh and also the kindle app :)

Actually, I would like to know the answer to that too.
I am off contract and have a bolt on 100 meg data package, which the iPhone chews up pretty easily. SA is screwed again by our providers..overseas they have unlimited data.

Anyways..I would like a browser that allows you turn off pics loading. I am sure there must be a few. Saves a LOT of time and data.
Also..the email sucks since you can't tell it to only download emails less than X kb big.
My old SE P990 let me do that. The iphone wants to download all emails...even when some idiot has emailed me 20 megs of stupid pics, and I have no way of knowing how big the email is when it is incomming.
Any tips there?

My data usage normally clocks in at 150MB a month.

I had a look at the Safari settings, but there's not much you can change. Doesn't have settings to block out pics, etc....well, not that I can see.

Don't know of any other 3rd party browser that works with the iphone, haven't seen anything in the app store yet.

So....if having the ability to disable pics, etc in a mobile web browser is very important to you, you might be better off with a different solution.
