I can get my grubby little paws on an iPhone, but the question is will it work on MTN?

I am using an Iphone on MTN and it is working excellent. I just had to change the Edge settings manually to get that to work.

No unlock yet for new 1.1.3 out of the Box phones, so wait until an unlock is available before buying a new 1.1.3 iphone. The unlock for the 1.1.2 iphone involves opening the iphone to short out a part of the phone and I will not suggest it for any novice. The alternative for 1.1.2 is to use a Turbosim from Bladox (seems to be sold out all over the world)

1.1.1 and 1.1.2 can be unlocked and works on both MTN nd Vodacom.

I believe 1.1.3 is still being worked on.

Many rumours of a 3G/GPS iPhone on the way.

Cant divulge too many details but it dont look like it on the cards for a while, its not our fault this time either.

heard those rumours to ... also a 16 Gig device.
i am not to sure about the 3G though .. as the States is not big on 3G at all
when you have so much WiFi coverage you dont need 3G ... now that the iPhone has legally made its way to Europe it might just be on the cards to dump a 3G chip on the device ...

I use a 1.1.2 OTB iPhone with a Stealthsim on vodacom. It works really well.

Dont upgrade your baseband if your BootLoader is 4.6.
If you Update your phone to 1.1.3 using iTunes you can throw away your simcard because you are forced to use at&t and there is still no known way to get past this. They are working on this so hopefully we will see a 1.1.3 unlock.

You can figure out what version your phone is is by asking for a serial number , the 4th and the 5th digits show the week the phone was made in.
Anything past week 45 is gonna be firmware 1.1.2 and up.
Believe me , the lower the firmware and bootloader version the better.
If the iPhone you can get has a 3.9 bootloader youre golden !

1.1.2 and up has 4.6 and this is a really hard bootloader to work with as it is due to this bootloader that 1.1.3 upgrades you baseband to a version you cant get out of (yet).

you can flash a 1.1.3 down to 1.1.1 , so its not a trainsmash if its a 1.1.3 version....

my recommendation is to follow one of the youtube online tutorials on how to unlock etc

Ok , let me clear something up.
There are 3 things you need to do ..
Activate - Get past the atnt activation screen and actualy be able to use the iPhone.
Jailbreak - Be able to install and run 3rd party applications.
Unlock - Be able to put in your non atnt simcard and be able to make a phonecall.

From iphone versions 1.1.2 OTB (Out The Box) you have a 4.6 bootloader which DOES NOT allow you to downgrade your baseband.
If you have a 1.1.2 OTB and you went and done a itunes upgrade to 1.1.3 , your baseband which was 04.02.13_G , will now be 04.03.13_G.
You will see this in your About section if you browse your iPhone.
This is your modem firmware version.
If you upgrade your iPhone modem firmware to 04.03.13_G , then sim hacks like Stealthsim / Turbosim / etc. Wont work anymore.

Yes you can downgrade your baseband (1.1.3 is 04.03.13_G) ONLY if your Bootloader is 3.9 and below. If you have a 1.1.2 , your bootloader is 4.6 and there is no way to downgrade this yet.

I say this because the dev teams need the 1.1.4 (or whatever version the next firmware version is that updates the baseband) to be able make a downgrade and fool the iPhone into thinking its a upgrade.

Ive been reading alot into these things .. you need to understand all these terms.

The Bootloader is exactly that , it boots and loads the phone OS.
Bootloader 4.6 patched all the security holes 3.9 still had.
4.6 wont allow you to downgrade your modem baseband. (yet)

Firmware - is like the version of the OS thats running on the phone.

Baseband - the version of the modem software.

Keep in mind that there are software wizards out there hacking away at the code.
Keep faith , 1.1.3 is already jailbroken and activated , as soon as the next firmware comes out the guys will make the unlock happen.

Can I save you all alot of money and alot of pain with it ?
Go onto ebay.com , I bought my iPhone for R4000.

You buy from someone who is willing to "ship world wide"
Who is a powerseller with 100% feedback and has up to $2000 paypal buyer protection , that way you know youre safe.

I tried to buy one from bidorbuy , i got robbed and now i need to suffer to get my money back. My purchase from ebay was smooth as silk , box was still sealed and the service was good. I got a tracking number the same day i won the auction.

Do the smart thing and register on www.paypal.com , youre gonna be glad you did , its extra protection for you as you can claim your money back if you dont get anything. Its wiser than doing a creditcard payment and hoping for the best.

Thanks a bunch! I have been waiting for someone with 1st hand experience to post; share and advise.

I have bought quite a bit of stuff of ebay and have always paid using paypal. I have had no problems except one (shipped item differed from auctioned item), and using the paypal dispute tools it was ruled in my favour and was refunded. You are however required to ship the item back at your cost which is the only pain if it is a heavy item or low cost (like a CD).

Follow the guidelines as suggested by @kerbyross and you'll be fine. As always: if it looks to good to be true it usually is. Also ask the sellers questions about their items. Feedback response time and info provided is usually a good indication of how things will go once you have won the auction. Oh and always take shipping that includes tracking or registered mail because once it arrives in SA it's really pot luck if it will arrive at its destination if you don't have it. And get it marked as a gift (sometimes helps to fool customs).

@kerbyross. What happened with customs, or did you manage to bypass them?

I payed R450 custom fees , this made up the total of R4000 for the iphone. I payed R3500 for the iphone. I waited almost a month as this was smack damn in between xmas and newyear so everyone was on holiday. My Stealthsim was R800 , i didnt pay any custom fees as it was marked as legal documents and sent to me in a yellow envelope.

If i can give you guys advice on bidding on something on ebay .. 90% of the bids happen in the last two minutes , babysit your auction , when you get outbid , raise the bid by more than the minimum. Dont get sniped.
