iPhone out 20 July

Given that Vodacom will be releasing it, chances are it will be the iPhone 2.0... since Vodacom and Vodafone in general have pushed their 3G networks heavily.

The new iPhone is 3G, but is that 3G = 384 Kb/s or does 3G = HSDPA-like speeds? In the presentation, Jobs said that the iPhone 2.0 is 36% faster than the Nokia N95, and we all know that the N95 is HSDPA capable.

Quote from apple iphone website.

More wireless. Less space.
iPhone 3G delivers UMTS, HSDPA, GSM, Wi-Fi, EDGE, GPS, and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR in one compact device — using only two antennas. Clever iPhone engineering integrates those antennas into a few unexpected places: the metal ring around the camera, the audio jack, the metal screen bezel, and the iPhone circuitry itself. And intelligent iPhone power management technology gives you up to 5 hours of talk time over 3G networks.2 That’s some of the best in the business.

From apple iphone specs:
Cellular and wireless
UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Wi-Fi (802.11b/g)
Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR

Thanks for the specs. Next question: 1.8 Mb/s or does this puppy go up to 7.2 Mb/s?

I doubt there is any old stock left. You haven't been able to purchase the phone from apple in over a month.

Lucky us.... so what we are going to be getting is ether the recall stock, or returns...

Haha :D

It hasnt even come here and ur already being pessimistic... Give it a chance :)

Not pessimistic at all....if the other dude (bawana) is right in saying that there has been massive shortage of iPhone stock.... what is the natural conclusion to follow?

I'm so looking forward to part with R7500, on top of price of the 24 month contract package @ +- 750 a month, just so I can use the overpriced broadband to rack up extra R2000 on my cell phone bill... now that is pessimistic view

lolies..

The iPhone 2 is only going to be manufactured and sold now on mass globally, iPhone 1 is no more.

it wont be R7500, it cant be R750 a month (Thats what car payments cost LOL) and R2000 on broadband means you'lle be downloading 10 Gigs a month?

c'mon, seriously??

Never say never. Nokia N82 before June '08 was R800 per month with R1500 pay-in on Vodacom.

As of June, it's been reduced to R315 p.m. with ~R1400 pay-in.

Yet MTN offers the N82 for zero pay-in and R309 p.m...

trading grand-ma for an iphone2

I'm trading my grand-ma for an iphone2. PM if interested.

She's a good ol'rouder, does the laundry, iron and cooks lovely meals. She also cuddles if you ask nicely. Also, she's still good for at least 10 years.

Grand-ma does not force you to sign up for a 2 years contract.

Most def a good swop.

:D

don't guess so, i think this may even be free on weekender or topup135

“Just one year after launching the iPhone, we’re launching the new iPhone 3G that is twice as fast at half the price,” - Steve Jobs

How do you mean you "don't guess so"? That was straight from the site. You HAVE to get a contract for this thing.

True, you most probably won't be able to buy it prepaid...

But it should be available on a low contract with a under R2k pay-in...

Response from Vodacom regarding iPhone availability:
ie no definite date yet…

“Thank you for your e-mail communication to Vodacom.

Kindly be advised that the Apple iPhone will only be released to Vodacom South Africa on the 20/07/2008. The Apple iPhone has not been launched on the Vodacom network as yet. At present there is no estimated time of arrival for the handset. Before the handset is launched it will still need to undergo stringent testing, which can delay the launch.

Should you have any further queries, please contact us via e-mail at [email protected]

Warm Regards

Abigail Julius”"
