hi there

does anyone know about a sms application that i can buy from the istore that has a character counter? or free?

I have the 3.1.2 firmware factory installed and cannot jailbreak as i need to switch of my phone at the office during the day and dont want to use blackrain every time i switch the phone on.

thanx

ok you're a bit confused....

If you use blackrain you will not need to use it everytime you turn the phone on. You use it once, after that you can get 3rd party apps. There is an application that can count sms characters within the standard sms application.

Huh?

Okay, seems to me that I am a little lost.I used blackrain to jailbreak the phone and then installed cydia. After the cydia installation I installed irealsms. I had to reboot the iPhone. Each time that I switch it off and on it goes into recovery mode.

In the end I downloaded the recovery image from apple to restore the phone.

Do u think I did something wrong? Should I try and jailbreak again?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I am assuming your iPhone is a new 3GS, those have new hardware/ROM chip which requires a tethered Jailbreak (which means you need to run blackrain every time you restart the device), there is no way around that at the moment if you want to have a Jailbroken iPhone.

Correct.
Instead of iRealSMS try SMSHelper which integrates with the default SMS app.

Yes sir

Yes, as said in my first post I have the 3.1.2 software factory installed and I thought the software where the reason for the jailbreak issue.

This is the reason why I posted here in the first place to find another solution for the SMS problem.

Any suggestions on how to proceed without the jailbreak?

Thx

BiteSMS , rated as 1 of the best apps for Texting , counter etc

I doubt you will find any apps in the appstore that will have the SMS character counter that you need. Apple doesn't allow them due to the apps "duplicating built in apps functionality". Annoying but we are at their mercy.
The tethered jailbreak is not great to have but if it was me - I would do it. Personally my iPhone (only a 3G do not even as much memory as the 3GS) has been up for 42 days without a reboot/power cycle of any sort. Before my last reboot I had 97 days uptime, and only rebooted to update the firmware. So ... shows - you don't need to reboot too often. And I use my phone a lot and play around with a multitude of things.
3Gee's suggestion of Bitesms won't help you as a JB phone is needed for that too. BiteSMS is my app of choice, I use it.

is there any way to backup the entire iphone before jailbreaking again?

If i jailbreak now, will i loose anything on the iphone like contactsw etc?

Am i right if i assume that everytime you restart your iphone you need to run the blackrain and jailbreak it again?

thx for all your help so far

You won't loose anything at all by jailbreaking with Blackrain. To be safe just do a backup in iTunes, right click on your iphone and pick backup (a sync should do a backup as well). This will backup all data: apps, contacts, photos etc.

I gather so, not having to deal with that personally I can't say 100% what to expect. I am not sure after you rejailbreak if you need to reinstall cydia and other JB apps.

are you using a paid version or cracked version , i am looking for V4.5 cracked

okay, i did the jailbreak, seems like you have to run the blackrain app agan everytime you reboot your phone.

everything else still works 100% and everything is still in place.

thx

I bought BiteSMS quite a long time back, it is well worth the investment, is nice and cheap to use their credit for international SMS's.
There is no crack out for v4.5 yet.
I don't run any cracked/pirated apps on my iPhone (even though I could if I wanted to), just the way I've decided to go.

glad to hear you got sorted out. Enjoy

That doesn't sound right. I too have 3GS with 3.1.2 and blackrain. No need to reinstall app at every reboot...

With the brand new 3GS models (which came with 3.1.2 installed at the factory), you unfortunately have to indeed reinstall blackrain with every reboot.

If you jailbreak with pwnagetool does it still do the reboot thing?

I think it is just the same as the 24kpwn exploit was shut in the rom, which I think both methods make use of (just in different ways) but I can't confirm that, I just never looked into it much more.
