iPhone to get Skype

Wouldn't really be an attractive option if I'm still paying R2/MB for traffic. Unless ofcos I can use it with that uncapped BlackBerry apn.
We asked Vodacom and MTN about this - will publish as soon as we get feedback.

Skype FTW! I hope their South African call prices also come down during the course of this year.

However - in my experience - the current "SKYPE" applications don't work via the BB APN. There is a callback to a JHB number, and this comes off your free minutes or air time.... I certainly hope the new SKYPE for BB application uses the data network only.

You may not use VOIP on your GSM network. It says so in your contract and the operators reserve the right to charge you as they see fit. i.e. through the nose.

I've been using fring to call my family in Hong Kong for well over a year now. The voice quality is almost the same as cell phone calls, although there tend to be a lag once in a while. Really, this is old news. Especially considering that fring can link with you skype, gtalk, MSN and yahoo accounts; as well as being available for vast majority of the smartphones on the market including the iphone for a while now.

The only thing that I might look forward to is that skype for cell phone will have better quality voice and lag times. But since fring has been developing and refining their application I really don't see that being the case any time soon.

Fring has been available on the iphone for many months now. It does skype VERY well.

As for skype working on the blackberry unlimited plan... I HIGHLY doubt that will work. As it is, tethering a bb to a laptop, watching youtube etc will charge normal data rates and are not part of the blackberry unlimited plan. (only web browsing/email are part of the unlimited plan) Therefore, skype will also be charged regular data rates on a blackberry IMO

Technically, Fring's protocol is much better and much more lightweight than Skype. So I don't think you'll get better quality or latency with Skype if you compare it to Fring.

We've, in turn, asked RIM to comment as this is a BIS issue and not really a Vodacom (or MTN, for that matter) one.

The iPhone one is easy though. Vodacom does not block or shape any protocol of any kind. So on any Vodacom APN (internet, internetvpn, unrestricted, vlive, apple, etc.) you'll be able to use whatever you like at your active data rate.

BES will be subject to your corporate policies.

I wish skype dies but that wont happen. I hate proprietary closed protocols.

@Vodacom3G, can you confirm this?

Vodacom is an equal opportunity network and do not discriminate in any way or form whatsoever based on protocol, port number or application.

We bill at the IP layer, i.e. we don't know (and don't really care) what you do with the data. To the point that we can't even tell you which naughty sites you visited. ;)

For added clarity; The Blackberry APN is a product by RIM, and not Vodacom, and as such comes with a specific set of restrictions as determined by RIM. These are mostly to protect their systems against abuse (streaming, massive downloads, etc.)

Um, but Fring never let me make any calls over 3g with the Iphone....only over wireless...that sux cause it worked pretty well over 3g/edge on my old Nokia N80 :(

You just need a modified version and you're good to go ;)

But it will cost you an arm and a leg on 3G tho!?

Rubbish! Who told you that? I have been using VOIP on the Vodacom network since 2005. I know they always reserved the right to charge for VOIP, but those rumours died a few years back.

I also like Fring a lot. The client is very robust and the compression codec can work with as little bandwidth as possible.

Skype's software does have some limitations, if you find that to be the case, then Fring is your best bet.

(all on Nokia phones of course... I don't have an iPhone... yet!) :p
