iPhone to get Skype

G.711 is still inferior to AMR-NB - fullstop. No matter what throughput you get with it, it remains andolder and less efficient codec.

I think you just need to admit that you are out of your field here and that the whole "but why, but why, but why" routine is a not helping your cause.

Sure, Fring has its place, but VOIP aint that place.

Eish, you're the one that can't give any actual numbers. ;) While I've not seen Truphone's performance on the network, I have seen Fring's and the numbers you Google'd are wrong.

Do yourself a favour and set the various products up in a lab and run some tests (over 3G) and report your findings. I'd be keen to see how your results compare to the testing we've done.

Dude fring works well enough, your comparisons are about compression but they are basically the same... audio still gets compressed and sent over the Internet.

VODACOM DON't ALLOW ?

So I have just installed Skype on my 3G iPhone ...

Pre Paid SIM, I have a 250MB Data Bundle that expires 17th April ...

Skype fires up  but when you try to make the usual Skype Test Call to start up comes the message:

"Skype calls over 3G networks are currently not supported due to restrictions that may be in place on your data plan. For more information visit www.skype.com"

Anyone care to comment on this?

Give TruPhone www.truphone.com a try. It works great on fruits (apples and berries) as well as Nokias.

Perhaps it's not the SP, cos the boys at GSMArena, have also had issues with it.

Thanks for your replies - lets see what Vodacom3G has to add 2mrow.

Oh, my iPhone is NOT "Jailbroken".

Interesting that I can & do run Skype no problem on my MTN (contract) HTC TyTyn II - only problem there is that it uses the "PC part of the phone" and is useless unless you use the HTC supplied "walk & talk" (Microphone & Stereo headset). But otherwise it's great - used it to call home for at least 30 minutes a night via 3G last year when I was working away from home, average data use was about 10 MB for the 30 minutes (much lower than running Skype on my laptop and using the HTC as a 3G modem).

It's not a Vodacom restriction, rather Skype. Best to take it up with them.

I did read somewhere that Skype on iPhone only works on WiFi.

Thanks for verifying this, I had suspected as much but did not have the time to go digging around on Skype's website last night. (Rather watched 3rd degree on eTV, was excellent last night but thats another subject!) And I would imagine thety did to please the AT&T's of this world :)

Skype works pretty - probably better than fring.

I heard one report that the 3G limitation on the iPhone would be lifted when 3.0 comes out. Time will tell I guess.

if jailbroken, make sure you are on the latest Mobile Substrate (cydia) otherwise the app will crash after a minute or so. Also, download VoipOver3G and you will be able to use Skype over 3G for now until 3.0 comes (if it is unblocked in the release version). Might have to edit the plist for VoipOver3G to set it up for Skype, but I'm not sure as I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

EDIT: Yes, i was right.. The voipover3g string for Skype is: com.skype.skype -All lowercase. You must add it in the VoIPover3G.plist located in /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/
