iPhone versus Android

In the meantime I have had to resort to Google to make my iPad4 functional, what with Google Search, GMail, Google Maps and Google Chrome.

Apple iOS doesn't do any of those well.

You're still not getting the definition of an ecosystem are you? Ecosystem != Operating System.

How do you use Google Search on the iPad btw? I have it on mine but it's a white elephant. And what on earth convinced you to get the unfunctional iPad4?

You don't need any of that, just plug your phone into your pc and copy files directly from the phone and PC vice versa.

I have a SGS3 and I don't use kies.

OK, so I use iTunes to create playlists that update every time I sync my iPhone to give me songs that I haven't listened to in a while, either on my iPad, PC or on my Hi-Fi via my Apple TV. This is completely automated (no need to copy and paste files), and updates every time I plug my iPhone into my PC. I don't whether this is now possible, but I wasn't able to do this with my Android phone 18 months ago. Just one example of what the Apple eco-system can do.

I got it for media on the US store. But it was a waste of money, I have not found any use for it, and I could have done the media on my old iPod Touch 4th Gen (only realised that afterwards).

PS : I am typing this on my Asus TF-700T, which is way better than the iPad4 (which is lying at home gathering dust).

Even that's not really an ecosystem. It's just iTunes. An ecosystem is the ability to live all parts of your functional (e.g. technological) life within one interconnected system.

That's the beauty of the iPhone - Google make great apps for iOS (often better than the Android ones), so I can still use the Google eco-system, without getting involved in the mess that is Android!

Geef me. I find use for!

That's the power of the second mouse button :D

That's just one example. When you add an Apple TV into the mix, it does become an ecosystem. I subscribe to video podcasts which I have the option of watching on either my TV, iPad, iPhone or PC, all sharing the same same source files. The same with movies and TV Shows.

I use Google for email, calendar, docs (drive), etc, but for media Apple has a more complete solution.

I'm sure :D

I was tempted to swap it with my daughters iPad2, but with her lifestyle she could lose it (stolen, etc), so maybe it is better that she keeps the iPad2, for the time being.

BTW, just played with the iPad2, I don't think that I could work with that crappy screen resolution any more. Once you have been spoiled by the likes of the Asus TF-700T and the iPad4 there is no going back !

This is also why I believe that the iPad Mini is a no-no, in spite of the smaller form factor. 7" tablets need at least 1280x800, and 10" tablets at least FullHD.

Yeah that's more like it. Actually Android does have a true ecosystem of sorts; one could have your TV, phone and tablet at least all interconnected in quite a good way. But saying Apple's ecosystem sucks because iOS doesn't have native Gmail is just definitionally mistaken.

I'm with you there. The screen density is definitely better but I just can't go back to less than retina level now :(

In actual use the iPad mini screen resolution isn't so bad, and you really have to see the mini side-by-side with the retina iPad to see the difference. Of course the pixel density is much better on the mini compared to the iPad 2, due to the smaller screen size.

Sure, I have not actually looked close-up at a Mini yet. But the iPad2 is no longer acceptable.

This applies especially when using an App like Pressreader.

So ... Android + Chrome OS + Chrome browser + GMail + GTalk + Google+ + Google Docs + Google Maps + Google Drive + PlayStore ... all interconnected using one Google ID is not an ecosystem?

Must all ecosystems look like Apple's to be called a "real" ecosystem?

Jeepers ... the effort and spin it takes to defend Apple against the stats is astounding.

I'll accept that point - taken (although you can access all of that save the Play Store from iOS). What do you think about my earlier post bev?

Your post came through while I was busy with mine ... only saw it after my post landed. Google do have an ecosystem, and a very good one IMO, and it is open (despite what icyrus says) as users in other ecosystems can utilise most of it ... even inside the walled garden. I use Chrome browser, GMail. etc on my iPad Mini. I like what Google is doing. It weaves itself very cleverly inside all the other systems ans it will pay off in future. Google is a company packed to capacity with very very smart people ... one will be a fool to underestimate the synergy those brains are capable of ... i.e. Google knows what its doing.

Also, don't write Motorola off yet. Google is steering that ship in a direction where we'll see some realy cool stuff coming. The X series of devices will be the first wave.

So your response is 'have faith'? So far, nothing. Niks. Underperformance, ludicrously overpaid acquisitions and failure to rein in their partners. Google has always been somewhat of a Montessori School of side projects with no definite aims. Android is the result of just that kind of 'we'll get to the profit part eventually' thinking.

I have a theory that the X series could be the beginning of Google's separation from 'Android as a commodity'.
