iPod pricing – an objective view

 does that mean that South Africa's import duties etc account for the higher local iPod pricing?

As opposed to gouging by the importer?

I just means that SA might not be the cheapest place to buy an iPod, for whatever reasons, including import duties and VAT. But it sure as hell beats a lot of other places on the planet.

OVER PRICED! like every other electronic good's in S.A

Erm, so the index says that a $149 iPod in the US costs $226 in SA, ie nearly $80 (50%) more.
So that means that a $3.41 Big Mac should cost $5.17 right, but according to the Big Mac Index it only costs $2.22!
Somethings gotta be going on.
Sure there are duties and VAT to consider, but Core is a WHOLESALER and they want us to believe that they buy iPods from Apple at RETAIL prices. What a load of the brown stinky stuff.

How do they manage to have academic pricing and academic stores?

Problem with that argument is that Big Macs are not imported from the US or where ever. It is produced locally.
But ye, Ipods are too expensive.

Sounds like telkom math when the majority of countries studied were cheaper. ;)

Import duties on electronics are not that high. The bulk of the proce difference Core (Local distributor) is pocketing due to the fact that they say is due to the fact that shipping here is SO expensive lol.

As stated in the article, iPods are manufactured in China - as is the case with most other things, so all the ships with the shipping containers get from China to Europe via the Suez Canal and completely ignore Southern Africa, ok I can stomach that, but what is the price of an iPod in the equatorial & northern parts of Africa...?

A year ago, I could buy an 8GB iPod nano from a new, over-hyped, over-tourist-ized and over-priced mall in Singapore for about R1 800.00 equivalent - and get cash back at the airport. At the same time, a 2GB iPod from any South African dealer would cost as much.

If the truth were told, I don't want a 2GB iPod which is fairly cheap and a little useless. It's easy to say we're not that much more expensive when you look at the bottom of the range. What about the *real* iPods?

Let's not even mention that iPods are, like all Apple hardware, ridiculously over-priced swag!

That old chestnut...

Old news, saw it couple of weeks back. And since when is HongKong a 'country'???

Back when Big Macs were... well, big.

Hong Kong is very idependant from China from what I know, but is still part of China. Don't ask details - these stuff only makes sense when you write it in spaghetti.

You can buy a perfectly good handbag at Foshini for R500, as any woman will tell you, but you can also buy a Luis Vuitton bag for $500, yet they're
physically virtually the same - same material and make quality. iPod = style, you end up paying for THAT.

South Africa over all isnt the cheapest place to buy anything, not just a ipod, but also other electronic equipment - laptops, desktop, server, TVs, PS3, Wii, etc etc!
