Is 144hz worth it

I've had a 27" Asus 1440p 144hz monitor for 4 years, it's great for FPS games like CSGO and I've never experienced any eye strain with it whatsoever (and I spend a lot of time at my screen).

Also playing cinematic games like The Witcher 3 at 1440p is really an incredible experience. So yeah I would say 1440p 144hz really is the sweet spot for pretty much everything these days, not only gaming.

I know it did in the CRT days, because that was the frequency that the screen was lit up. Lower refresh rates would cause noticeable flickering. With LCDs, the backlight and image is "on" the whole time, and it just changes at that frequency.
The exception are those monitors that use PWM for dimming, which effectively let the backlight flicker to make the display dimmer.

No idea about the science, but my eyes definitely feel less strained at the end of the day.

I also wondered about this. I don't think so. I think the perceived difference is because high-refresh rate monitors probably use higher quality panels, or are upgrades from old screens, so the difference comes from both the higher refresh rate as well as a better quality panel.

Even at 30hz there shouldn't be any flickering on an LCD. You can check it by setting it to 30hz in the advanced display settings.
 
Im new to this IT stuff, I bought my card 2nd hand last year for 2 grand and Im running it on my 2010 Samsung 24inch 1080p 60fps monitor
 
Would my 1050Ti OC 4GB run games on that?

Nothing stopping you from running at a lower res / quality settings, but what I can tell you from personal experience is that my previous graphics card (1070) started to struggle at 1440p.

I mean, technically, an onboard card can run games on an 8K monitor, but it's not going to be much fun.
 
Now the question is can one of those replace 2 x 24's?
I am a total screen whore, I must admit. Have a 32" 2K and a 2560 * 1080, but what I actually want is a 4K for work, and the aforementioned monitor for gaming...

Sitting in the dark on my laptop with its 1080p 14" screen really is driving this home to me. :ROFL:
 
I don't game much nowadays
but sometimes I run doom eternal with headphones at 1440p 144hz 200fps for a minute or two to feel like I'm part of the master race again, before I go back to playing openTTD.
 
Depends on your GFX

My HP Omen laptop has 144hz and RTX2060...and CS or lighter FPS games feels amazing

Not so much frames for Cyberpunk though

But yeah, overall, 144hz definitely worth it
 
To actually answer your question, I'd take one 32" @ 2K over two 1080p monitors of any size, any day (assuming gaming and work-related stuff was the objective).

Not for me. For work, on 2 x 1080p I can have 2 "1080p full screen" apps open. On 1 x 2K I have 1 " 1080p full screen" app and a little extra that's too small to do anything with.

For work, 4K @ 100% is king. If I ever have to go back to the office, I will use my own money to buy a 4K screen to take with.
