Is 144hz worth it

So im guessing ips is better then. I don't think I've ever actually looked at contrast as a spec on screens before so not too clued up on that.

I have an older system with a really new gpu.

8700 non k
16gb corsair rgb ram
3080 Msi trio x
870 evo ssd

I currently have a Dell 4k monitor (P2715Q) but I bought it in 2017 so not sure if I need to go 4k again or no

I only play games, usually anything good not a particular genre but atm playing assassins Creed Oddesy and Warhammer 2 total war and Warhammer 3 coming out in December. Also a big Wow fan and usually get really invested into it when I play it.

And I really enjoy emulating older games too like ffx on ps2. Looks really good on emulator.

I'd get this one - if you're going to game. (Which Linuxman linked previously) Hardware Unboxed reviewed it very favorably a while back.

Did months of research myself and waited a few years until pulling the trigger on a display. Tried a VA panel but the smearing / ghosting was simply too high. Never again - atleast until they improve VA panel response time significantly.

For work use it's a different story and I can't tell you anything there.

That does seem like a winner.

I'm just wondering if going from 27 inch to 27 inch again is a side grade and not an upgrade.

I'm in an awkward spot where I have a 4k screen, so all the 165hz ones are 1440p.

I suppose I'll use both side by side and judge.
I'm just gonna feel really dumb if I waste 8k

Like you I have the P2715Q, and then got the 32" Mecer 1440p 144hz VA display, which I later replaced with the S2721DGFA. So now I have 2 x Dell 27" monitors.

I need to keep the 4K monitor, as nothing comes close to it for work.
The 32" was a bit too large for me, it felt "overwhelming" at desktop distances. 1440p is also a bit too low res for 32". I'll try a 4K 32" in future, when it makes sense.

Yeah... I disagree.
If your eyes are so good to see an 8% difference between 1440p and 2160p, you must be sitting right on top of your display. I suggest you get glasses and move further away from the display.

1440p is the perfect resolution for 32".

Pushes it to it's absolute limit no? Like 1080p at 27" already looks like crap in my opinion. Can't say I've seen 1440p at larger than 27" yet.

I wouldn't say perfect, but you're right, it's not THAT bad. It has the same PPI as 1080p @ 24".
It was already at more than arms length due to me not enjoying fast moving games on a 32" display too close to me.

To be honest, I also notice the lower than ideal PPI on my 1440p 27", but I only do because it's worse than the other displays in my life that I view at desktop distances. Like my 15" laptop, my phone, and the fact that it is right next to my 4K 27" display. Every time I turn my head I see the difference, even though it is almost twice the distance I view my 4K display at. In gaming it doesn't matter, and the smoother frame rate and higher refresh rate makes any discussion about PPI seem irrelevant.

If I up my budget to 10k is there anything really sexy at that price point?

What about 3440x1440p screens?

Samsung Q70T or LG Nano86 AFAIK are the cheapest 4K@120hz / HDMI2.1 TV's

I used to use a 27" 1080p and 32" 20K side-by-side. The latter is very much pushing the bounds of acceptability, and the former crisp by comparison and entirely useable (although there's always going to be something denser, no matter what you get, just about).

You should see the FPS I get on 20K with my 3070. :laugh:

Heavily disagree, 4k is a great resolution for 32", would prefer over 1440p but I know my graphics card can't handle it so the issue of running the game at a lower resolution than the display becomes an issue.
For just normal work, I'd love 4k, but I'd take 1440p with high refresh rate (120Hz+) over a 60Hz 4k due to scrolling, being able to read text while I'm scrolling without issue impacts my productivity more than the lower font size I can use at that resolution.

In regards to VA vs IPS, depends on the quality of both, modern VA is great, e.g. the Dell linked by genetic is a very good monitor to get as an all-rounder for that price point (used to have it before I emigrated).
 
I've got a 1440p 32" and it's fine, I sit half a meter away and can't see any pixels, I also have a 27" IPS 1080p monitor and it was also fine at that distance, sure if you sit right on top of it you'll see the pixels, but why would you do that? If you're doing that get glasses :-)

Lovely stuff! I have the 27" version and I love it. The HDR is decent, G-Sync is a win and of course that res and refresh rate. The tiny little speakers are a bonus too.
