Is a Mac really worth it

Getting desperate? All those viruses are for System 9 and earlier - can you find me one OsX virus that I am at risk of getting?

ugh... ok ...dammit my google finger grows tired! :p

Seriously though: its not the machines themselves but the lifestyle advertising and the fanboys that stick in the throat so any means of showing that whats advertised is rubbish will do at this point.

I'm a huge Apple fan but one thing I've tried to be consistent about saying is that they're not the right machine for everyone but they are the right machine for me.

macs get better when you install kubuntu. You get a serious OS on pretty hardware.

Having used both I would tend to disagree.

Ignoring everything else, as I mentioned earlier linux lacks the software I require. ;)

Im sure it lacks the software you require... you have a very specialised field of work. For those of us who use more of the internet.. its insufficient. I need my system to do a heck of a lot more than make pretty pictures, but as you pointed out.. it works for you.

Thank you - I'm glad you think they're pretty. :)

I'm not sure how you figure that mac's are somehow insufficient for those who "use more of the internet" - perhaps because I'm struggling to figure out what you're even talking about. Care to point out the deficiencies, specifically in OsX?

The mac... simple hardware and software for simple minds ;)
Not really. Thay have simplified things so you spend less time fiddling with the system innards at a low level.
Some people like to fiddle and learning useless things, and when you remove it they feel lost. Sound familiar?

I know that Mac's are not for me. Its not that I think Windows machines are better or anything like that, but I swear there is a line of code in every piece of Apple software that causes it to melt or mulfunction around me.

Even the latest all glorious (well thats the feedback getting from my Mac zealous mates) Safari crashed and burned on me.

Imo Mac's are great to look at, but thats where it ends. Granted I have spent very little time working with Mac' probably 10-20 hours in the last 6 years, but of that 90% has been spent fixing problems.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to slate Mac's and praise windows, just relating my experences. And I don't every forsee myself buying and moving over to Mac's, they just don't impress me enough.

I'm still loathe to upgrade from safari 2 to the buggy v3 so I can only imagine how awful it might be on windows.

Apple just makes awful windows software imo.

Geez:

Antivirus
The Mac Anti virus is thought to have orginated in France. Anti virus infects System 6 Macintoshes running Finder.

Anyone still using System 6?

AutoStart Worm
And then from the link:
PowerPC Macintoshes and compatibles, typically running QuickTime v2.0 with the "Enable CD-ROM AutoPlay" option enabled

Quicktime 2?

Melissa
Melissa virus, one of the most infectious viruses to date, is a mass-mailing email worm and macro virus combined.

This is not even for any version of MacOS.

C'mon, these examples are all for operating systems other than what Apples have been running for several years now. There have been a handful of proof-of-concept virusses for OSX, and like the proof-of-concept virusses for Linux/BSD/your_favourite_flavour_of-UNIX none of them resulted in a virus that managed to infect any end user's machines out in the wild.

I suppose the hardest part about telling your folks that ure gay... is telling them you have a mac. Before skeptik gets his panties all tied up.. im Joking. But yes skeptik, some of us actually like to know how things work, and while you consider it useless, I suppose thats just your lack of perspective :) Some things are not ment for everyone.

Found some bash.org quotes worth repeating:

<ez76> a mac vs. pc commercial you'll never see: "Whatcha doin, PC?" "I'm playing this new game." "Oh really, which one?" "Any." "Oh." (silence) (fade

< robT> Name ONE thing that your windows comp can do that my MAC cant
< bawss> Right click.

Relax mac fantatics :> macs are almost as good as a pc :> theyve come a long way recently :> just learnt you get ettercap for mac.. interesting update that. Anyways, I am pretty sure you can install windows on the new macs as well.

I prefer my pc hardware because its cheap, faster and easly upgradable. I wouldnt mind a mac notebook... theyre wonderful eye candy.

What exactly are you referring to that linux has the OS X doesn't that is so critical?

 That hasn't been true for a long time now so you're going to have to find some other mantra. ;)

Dude Kubuntu is probably the least serious (and most buggy after Fedora) Linux distro out there. If you want to be serious, use Real Debian :p

Just learnt that security penetration apps can be compiled on mac osx, didnt know they had done osx ports of some popular programs. Well I suppose it is a commercial OS based on decent FREE OS... so dont know why I thought mac wouldn't be able to run it.

Seems like mac can run most things linux can, not all of them, some decent stuff the mac guys are missing out on, but its not critical stuffs.

http://www.finkproject.org/ seems interesting to those wanting to play with OSS. they even have apt-get!
