Is a Mac really worth it

Unfortunately when it comes to Adobe Flash development i will stick to Windows architecture purely because it is approximately 100% faster developing and running Flash on a PC then it is on a Mac.

For some bizzare reason Mac's tend to utilize software rendering when it comes to the flash runtime.

Wish I could use a Mac as they are darn sweet machines.

I wonder if that is Adobe's fault or Apples?

You still could use a mac - it's just hardware after all and it runs windows as well as any other computer. Many people use virtualization software such as VMWare or Parallels, or even boot into windows natively for special circumstances. Best of both worlds imo.

Macs have lost their shine for me.
They seem to be putting in lousy parts and taking shortcuts. Matsush1ta drive, glossy screen, dodgy mice, cheapo graphics card etc..

Also their designers are not thinking things through. The new alu-Macs have very sharp edges around the CD slot so you're going to get scratched disks if your aim is slightly off.

I feel better having the "old" white one now. :)
Bought it a few months before the aluminum one came out.

But I'm pretty confident that for about 60-70% of the price of a Mac (whichever model) I can have a comparible PC.

Forget about the price. You'll make up the difference in Antivirus licenses before the end of your Mac's lifetime...

Then you are exactly the kind of person (a developer) who should complain to Adobe. If you think Flash is bad on a Mac, wait until you use the flash plugin on Linux - it's not uncommon for a web page with lots of flash content to hit 100% CPU usage, regardless of what hardware you're running.

Write to Adobe. Tell them you're frustrated by the huge performance difference between Flash for Windows and Flash for OSX.

Definitely a 'right tool for the job' debate ...if you're buying a work machine.

If its personal preference and you already have one then go with it, personal computing is a modern privilege and and everyone should be free to enjoy it in the way that thye choose.

If you're on the fence and cant make sense of all the hype, fanaticism and bleating you should read this article:

Have my MacBook Pro for two months now - have been a windows user since DOS.

Anyhat, for me it wasn't really about switching, more like broadening horizons. I can still run my Windows 'apps' in BootCamp/Parallel if I need to (Supreme Commander!), but lately I just do everything in OSX. Am using Eclipse for development work - and that runs sweetly on the Mac.

So was it worth it? Hell yeah.

How do you figure that with a free antivirus?

Up to you if you want to go for one of the free ones. In my experience, supporting clients who opt for those, they just aren't as good as some of the commercial ones. Although I'll give you this, they are better than Norton - all of them.

Then again, most people who hang out here seem to be somewhat more tech savvy and sensible in what they do on their computers, so the dangers are probably minimal.

But I won't trust my mom with AVG or Avast free edition.

I've heard that a lot.

I dont trust either of the fossils with windows regardless of the anti-virus software - they're not particularly clued up as far as users go. Fortunately my mother got a Macbook and my dad is 12000 kms away so he's someone else's problem :)

Neither do I but as it stands neither of them can afford a Mac right now and quite frankly, I have other things to do with my money - like buy myself a Mac :D

She pays for her own computers. I just ordered it for her from Amazon and it was waiting when next went to NY.

Problem I have with my mother is that she complains about the screen size of the Macbook. She wants at least 14" XGA or 15" WXGA. Now this was doable before they scrapped the iBook - now I have to get her a MPB. Tough, she can use her Acer for now.

Dad uses his computer mostly for Word Perfect (5.1 for dos in a dos box) and is mostly too scared to go anywhere but gmail.com so I'm not too worried about him :-)

Mine had the same concerns about screen size but considering that the 13.3" MB has a native resolution of 1280 by 800 compared to the 14" ibook's 1024 x 768 she was pleasantly surprised.
