Is a Mac really worth it

I'm still loathe to upgrade from safari 2 to the buggy v3 so I can only imagine how awful it might be on windows.

What's wrong with Safari 3? I installed it when it came out, and until I read your post I've completely forgotten I have it. Everything works as it did before, and the things that don't work are the same things that didn't before the upgrade - just some websites.

Just learnt that security penetration apps can be compiled on mac osx, didnt know they had done osx ports of some popular programs. Well I suppose it is a commercial OS based on decent FREE OS... so dont know why I thought mac wouldn't be able to run it.

Seems like mac can run most things linux can, not all of them, some decent stuff the mac guys are missing out on, but its not critical stuffs.

http://www.finkproject.org/ seems interesting to those wanting to play with OSS. they even have apt-get!

In the end OS X is unix through and through.

Personally I prefer MacPorts to fink though.

 That hasn't been true for a long time now so you're going to have to find some other mantra. ;)

Dude, seriously, I couldnt give poo what OS someone runs, just Mac users are fun to tease. The simple software for simple minds was based on a religious based chirp I thought I would modify cause you defend Mac like PS3 boys and Xbox people chirp each other.

I know you are passionate about your mac :)

koffiejunkie, Im curious... what can Debian offer me that Kubuntu cant? And when you say buggy could you be more specific... what bugs does kubuntu have the debian doesnt have? Want to know what to keep my eyes open for.

The main thing for me is it didnt support my plugins. Dont think I could live without acidsearch, pithhelmet and Stand.

Geez:

Anyone still using System 6?

AutoStart Worm
And then from the link:

Quicktime 2?

This is not even for any version of MacOS.

C'mon, these examples are all for operating systems other than what Apples have been running for several years now. There have been a handful of proof-of-concept virusses for OSX, and like the proof-of-concept virusses for Linux/BSD/your_favourite_flavour_of-UNIX none of them resulted in a virus that managed to infect any end user's machines out in the wild.

Did I mention that they were old? hmm mmm ...I did didn't I?

The point I am trying to make is that not having viruses is quite a different thing to being immune to them which is what Apple tries to sell ever so subtly and is a lie.
For most people saying that the Mac is 100% virus free means that it will never ever ever not in a million billion years get one. What it actually means is that there are no current reported infections which if you'd like to take the semantic chess even further is actually true for the PC I am currently typing this on as it too is 100% virus free.

Clear as mud?
...precisely.

Between Fink and Darwin Ports there is very little left that doesn't run on OSX.

The only thing in the world that I genuinly miss is Easytag - yes yes, I can do my tags with iTunes, although the ability to selectively apply certain fiels to more than one track really does speed up things. If you don't know what I just ranted about, you have to check it out.

I have about 60GB worth of music that needs to get tagged properly, so easytag really speeds things up for me. Luckily my music sits on an external disc hooked up and shared from a Debian box, so I found a nice way to use this. Startup X11 (on the Mac), ssh -X from the X11 terminal to the linux box, run easytag in the ssh session, minimise X11. Brings up Easytag on my OSX desktop. Nice.

Another thing I really enjoy is that OSX works well with NFS - makes my life so much easier.

My advice, if that's the sort of discussion you're looking for then you'd best stick to the console section.

I haven't tried any plugins - granted. But to be fair, plugins not being compatible is not really Safari's fault. Major release changes things and devs need to update their software. Major releases of FireFox have the same effect.

I understand that but at the time of v3 being released there was such bad press so couple that with the lack of extensions and the upgrade didnt appeal to me one bit.

I suppose the hardest part about telling your folks that ure gay... is telling them you have a mac. Before skeptik gets his panties all tied up.. im Joking. But yes skeptik, some of us actually like to know how things work, and while you consider it useless, I suppose thats just your lack of perspective :) Some things are not ment for everyone.

Found some bash.org quotes worth repeating:

<ez76> a mac vs. pc commercial you'll never see: "Whatcha doin, PC?" "I'm playing this new game." "Oh really, which one?" "Any." "Oh." (silence) (fade

< robT> Name ONE thing that your windows comp can do that my MAC cant
< bawss> Right click.

Relax mac fantatics :> macs are almost as good as a pc :> theyve come a long way recently :> just learnt you get ettercap for mac.. interesting update that. Anyways, I am pretty sure you can install windows on the new macs as well.

I prefer my pc hardware because its cheap, faster and easly upgradable. I wouldnt mind a mac notebook... theyre wonderful eye candy.
That's the trouble with Microsoft products. They are so badly designed, that people mistake it for 'sophistication'.

Anyone who's ever got involved in MS certification will attest to that:eek:

Tinkering with proprietry system stuff will not help in the next release when they decide to replace it all. It may feel good to have 'learnt' all that gumpff, but what good does it do you?

I had a friend who tried out a Mac and couldn't believe it worked with only one button. He was forever convinced it was somehow inferior because it was 'different'.

What happened?
