Hey guys! I want to share what's on my mind and hear some feedback from you.

Some background; I've been a PC gamer for most of my life and enjoyed it! I didn't do the online gaming thing as we always had LAN Parties and WoW just isn't my scene. What I did get tired of was having to upgrade my PC every 2-3 years just to keep up with the latest games, so I decided to move into consoles. I got a PS3 (bundled with a few things and still half the price of a PC) and loved it! Over the years I acquired a nice headset and a collection of games, mainly FPS!

Ok so now the PS4 is out and I have started to do the numbers. The PS4 now costs the same as a nice PC (I already have a nice screen, keyboard, mouse, lots of storage etc.), the PS4 games are quite a bit more expensive than PC games an climbing! I have to subscribe to PSN+ every year ( i know you get free games, but how many of them would I actually want, I only buy about 2 games a year anyway). Also if I want to make the PSN+ worth my while I need to download some of their offerings, which means i need to make my internet uncapped and half the download speed, which will also cost about R300 more every month!

Therefore:
PS4: R6300
2 x Games per year : R1500
PSN+ per year: R650
Uncapped Internet: R300p/m (only the difference from my existing package)

or

Gaming PC: R7000 (say I sell my graphics card and buy a new one every 18 months = R1500)
2 x games per year R1000
and that's it!

So what do you guys think?

No. Its just a pc in a fancy box.

If you are going to use your pc more then rather upgrade that. I personally am going to wait until the Slim version gets released later on before buying a PS4, though I might pick up a must have game here or there in the mean time to avoid being unable to find it later on.

If I won one I would have taken it but I'm not going to pay for one ;)

My PS3 has been mostly unused. Prefer PC.

Why do you feel you only need uncapped for the PS3?

The difference between the two is you're paying a once off fee when going for a console compared to the PC. The console also gives you a consistent experience where the PC not.

Don't forget that PSN+ subscription gives you access to dozens of titles each year. You would spend just as much on PC if you made use of GOG, Steam Sales and Humble Bundle.

Reality is its all about the exclusive titles and unique gaming experience each platform brings.

Very much what I'm doing, waiting for the next revision.

Console is great if you have kids - much less bother to look after, maintain, etc.

That said, the PS4 lags way behind the PS3 at the moment in the media player department - the PS3 is used as a media hub in our home, and the PS4 doesn't have the capability, so I'll wait for that to become a reality.

Could you give an example of when that has ever happened?

I can yes. Obviously not of AAA titles as those tend to be easily found at later stages compared to the less popular games, such as LAIR which came out in the early stages of the PS3 lifecycle, didn't get one then, can't find one now.

All the pro's mentioned here is exactly why I do enjoy the console! I currently buy all my PS3 games on disc, i like the idea of having them on display, not having to re-download them (my first PS3 got damaged by a power surge) and the limited amount of disk space. Thus I my 10Mb line is capped at 50GB and is perfect for my current needs (I always use +- 95% of it), I don't like waiting for streams to buffer and can watch a movie within 20 minutes of starting the download! A uncapped 4Mb line will cost me R300 more if I want to make the best of the PSN+ offerings.

It's a good thing that you can't find it.

It is available on Amazon though but rather not waste your time.

Depends on you want to do, but Plex server does work on the PS4. The only thing is that you can't fast forward or rewind. That is a pain. If you stop a video, it will give you the option to start off where you stopped.

If its a cost benefit analysis think you should probably wait it out till the prices start dropping a bit. While the PS+ games are a nice touch, so far there's non that can really stand up to the AAA titles, and waiting till the second gen and platinum sales could save you quite a bit. Also there might be another drop in the uncapped prices by then, saving you a bit more.

One bit of advice would be not to get the next gen titles on PS3, the upgrade to PS4 has a time limit for black flag and the like, so you'd be forced to use them on your current console.

It's definitely worth it, loving my PS4, but honestly the game price makes it a bit difficult atm, so no new games until I can justify R800 not going into my savings.

Thanks Gibson! Alot of stuff to take into consideration!

Is a PS4 really worth it?

Absolutely! But I would get a good 2'nd hand PS3 for starters. Lots of good content.

By the end of this year 2015 the PS4 will be untouchable in comparison to any other gaming device!

Love my PS4.
The games are expensive, but love the free the PS+ games.
I just love War Thunder.
The console is so fast compared to the PS3, especially Playstation store and the loading of friends list, etc.

You are going to wait a long time before it is going to get cheaper. The price has in fact risen twice since SA launch date.

Still have my PS3. GT6 is my main game and till Gt7 appears on the PS4, I will hold on to it.
It is also a much more complete Media device than the PS4 at this stage.

That said, I don't use my PS3 as the preferred media device anymore.
I use HP Proliant micro server with Plex Server on it.
It lacks fast forward and rewind, but the overall package makes up for it.
PS4 supports flash and thus the media browser forks rather good on the PS4, whereas the PS3 browser does not support flash and uses dlna, but then you loose out on the browser functions.

Ps4 is not worth is now, Il get mine towards the end of the year.
