I see it like this. In the past when a console was released you would have had to spend an enormous amount of money to get a comparable performance on pc. Secondly PC's had relatively complicated install procedures with serial codes and disk protection etc. Thirdly you needed to upgrade regularly to maintain playable performance in games.
Now you can get yourself a GTX 750ti, slap it into any core i3 or above you may have and will get better than console results without the cost. With steam and origin you no longer have complicated install and copy protection issues so the complexity is gone. Lastly this rig will already be more powerful than the existing consoles and as most games end up being console ports you should be able to use this pc for 5 years should no parts fail on you.
Consoles have unintentionally led to the pc arms race slowing down and this has been good for the pc.
