Is a VPN necessary?

I stream a lot and I've been seeing a lot of ads about setting up a VPN for security reasons. Is it a real security concern that I stream without a VPN?

I have my own router at home, so I'm wondering if I need to add a VPN as well?

Define what you mean by "stream"? If you mean downloading illegally pirated movies via BitTorrent then yes, getting a VPN is probably a good idea. If you mean watching Netflix or Showmax then there's no need.

A bit of BitTorrent yes, I guess I have to set up a VPN then. I'm not keen on those VPN services where you have to pay and all, can I just set it up using Windows 10?

I can see you are confused here.

When you pay for a VPN you are paying to connect to the service. Who are you going to connect to with your windows 10 VPN.

At some point you have to pay for something. Nothing is free.
