Have a R9 290 and I thought I'd see what the fuss is about, mining etherium at 29 mh, apparently my card can do 30 if I OC it. Should I do that?

Anyways, I'm not too clued up about this. Am I bein' stupid doing this? Setting it up was easy I just don't really see how GPU hardware = money

You don't need to overclock, unless you want a small heater in your room and a larger power bill.

Keep things at stock for the Hawaii cards.

I underclock my R9 290 actually, but mainly because it uses the reference design and cooler. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner if the fan goes full tilt.
Depending on what you mine, you can underclock the memory without losing hasing performance. Mine runs 875 GPU / 825 RAM.

You're likely looking at closer to 25 Mh (looking at the R9 290X spec). For such a small gain, it's no use to overclock, and you are likely to be less efficient. Leave it at stock. From the looks of it, that card already draws a heck of a lot of power.

Sorry to Jack this thread, wanting to start mining eth, nothing major, just use my pc in its downtime to generate a few rands.

Can anyone point me to a decent guide?

Go to NiceHash.com
Download NiceHash miner
Enter your bitcoin wallet address (assuming you've set one up already, get one here if you haven't)
Do the benchmark (takes a while)
Close benchmark once its done
Click on "Start"

Its that simple

Found some guide about downloading geth and using that?

Also nope no wallet as yet, any recommendations?

There's a link in my previous post where you can register for a wallet. :)

You can use geth if you want to mine ethereum, but doing it via nicehash is just easier - just a note, the DaggerHashimoto algorithm used for mining eth, needs more than 2GB of VRAM. There are ways around it, but not worth the effort.

Gonna give your original post a go! Thanks a mill!

I tried the Mist route. It took forever and is just a pain in the arse. Just go with nicehash.

On a side note, is it recommended to use the pc while it is "mining" or should you rather only run during off hours or does it not really matter?

I wouldn't game or do some other intensive task on it while mining, but basic stuff is fine.
