Is DSTV EasyView sufficient for watching the WC 2010?

I have a standard DSTV decoder (1110) and the DSTV EasyView package, which includes SABC 1, 2 and 3, and SuperSport Blitz (among other channels).

Is this good enough for the World Cup? Will SABC be broadcasting all the games live? Will the commentary be in English, or a mixture of English with our other African languages? I would assume that SABC would have full, LIVE coverage of the entire WC, even for games played simultaneously, but I have strong doubts about this. Can anyone confirm?

I was considering upgrading to a better DSTV package for the duration of the World Cup - so that I get more live coverage of the games, as well as quality commentary in English. I'm not a big sports or soccer fan, but don't want to miss out either. I don't need HD video or PVR functionality. I would just like to watch all of the major teams and major games live, without interruptions, and with quality commentary in English. How do the SABC commentators compare to the SuperSport commentators?

Will my current package cater for all my requirements? If not, which is the cheapest option? Perhaps DSTV Compact, Select, or Premium?
 
Supersport are using the English feed supplied from HBS (Fifa's production). They are also having in house Portuguese, Zulu and Xhosa commentary.
I'm sure SABC will use the HBS English feed as well.
 
I would suggest DSTV compact which includes SS3.

To my knowledge the SABC only has 1 language option but I'll have to make sure.

Scary thought, imagine watching the world cup with commentary switching between english, zulu, sotho, etc. damn irritating. Stick to one language.

SS has top class coverage, great highlights packages, excellent analysis, etc. all in all - damn good.

It'll be worth it for the duration of the WC.

Thanks for the detailed response - I appreciate it. Why DSTV compact? Is SS3 showing all the games? What about simultaneeous games?
 
SABC will show all games, including repeats late at night and on the next day, etc. So, EasyView is sufficient. However, I don't know about their commentary language.

I suggested DSTV Compact because it includes SS3. SS3 will broadcast all the games (all live except for simultaneous matches). The matches not shown live will be broadcast later. Also, you can choose between 4 language options by clicking the language button.

If you can afford DSTV Premium, I suggest that. That's what I have. I love the Soccer coverage.

Note. Supersport Blitz won't show any live games.

If you want to enjoy the wc coverage, you cannot seriously consider SABC.

Truly indeed, Compact would be the better package, and im sure the simultaneous games, would be shown on SS4, and as they have alluded to the language, SABC commentary would all be in 11 Official Languages in each match :D while with SS Commentary there is always an option to choose what you want to listen too.

So ja, just for the WC, i would also go via compact, the said thing though is Btv, has been shut down, and they are broadcasting all their games in English Commentary for FREE, and better picture to as well, so any1 still have the FTA BTV Network Settings, cause that is the reason why MC decided to shut it down and now blaming the Gorvernment of Botswana for the feed, cause i remember it was on PAS7 before i bought the HD PVR :D, perhaps there wouldnt be a need for you to upgrade your package, if you can get BTV on your public bouquet ( will try getting the network setting for BTV Sport)
 
Ahhh, forgot about BTV, that should work on the public bouquet though even though DSTV is stopping it. But if you really want to take the cheap way out, use DSTV Easyview, watch SABC 1, mute the volume and turn on Radio 2000 for english commentary. There might be a lag between the audio and video but hell, atleast u got it in english the whole time =)

Radio 2000 uses SABC commentators and they are not very good. They sometimes even use Brian Mo***eng and he's one of the worst.

carbon_Fibre, you are absolutely right.

However, you forgot to mention SS4, which is a local soccer coverage channel. The WC definately fits this bill and will run parallel games with SS3. The Games that SS3 and 4 will also be run on SS HD1 and HD2 in my opinion because SS HD is only for the highest profile sport coverage of the time. Note that SS HD is not available on Compact.

So, your best bet for the most options during the WC is Compact (R232/mth) because you get all of DStv's game coverage without having to pay for the premium bouquet (R529/mth). Further, repeat and delayed games are also run on Compact so you watch all the games of the day on the same day.

Furthermore, SS may be showing games different to SABC, which you will have on Compact. So you might actually have the option to watch four different games at any one time if SABC is also showing two different games (which are different from the ones on SS). Commentary on SS is also superior with Edgar Davids, John Barns and other top notch commentators and analysts on their panels.

DStv Select 1 and 2 only have SS Blitz and Action. Blitz is for sports news while Action shows different types of sport, which is usually not live and if it is live, it is uncertain what they will be showing. Even their programme guide is not clear. Compact is the best.

Thanks everyone, especially Carbon_Fibre, for your enlightened respsonses. I will sign up for DSTV compact for the duration of the World Cup, and downgrade back to DSTV EasyView when it is over (I don't watch much TV - mostly torrented material).

So what is the best way of doing the upgrade/downgrade (short of just phoning Multichoice and asking). Are there any tricks or helpful advise that could save a bit of money that I need to know about? I literally only need DSTV compact for the duration of the World Cup - i.e. from 10th June to 12th July.

Also, I have a few friends with DSTV Premium, and I know that there is a free streaming service for Premium users. Will the World Cup be available through this medium? I would like to set it up for use at the office, for day matches, or when we are still at the office. Is it possible to borrow these details from one of my friends? They definitely wouldn't mind sharing. I have about 60GB of WebAfrica bandwidth per month. Will it work? Or do I need to sign up for an MWEB account? What's the best option?

Pleasure is all ours with our responses, and please when you call the MC call centre for the upgrade, kindly notify them that your system must revert to Easy View once the WC is Over. so that you wont have to call them, Value for Money.

This set up wont work if you want to have live sport, since Dstv on Demand a.k.a Catch up TV, is for delayed content, so i dont think this would be an ideal solution to go via, and yes to view DOD you need a MWEB Account, you know it all NASPER boys http://www.naspers.co.za/index.cfm?content=2693 so this wont work...

this best option is to install or rent a dish for work from Teljoy or any other rental companies just for that particular period.
