Is DSTV Worth it?

Computer + Internet > TV

Personally, I would rather spend the money on improving my internet connection. TV in general isn't really that great.

that's what I did... cancelled the DSTV and used the money to buy bandwidth. Now I download what I want to watch... and can watch it when I have the time.

DSTV in its current format is a HUGE waste of cash!

I think dstv is worth it. Although pricey at R513 for DSTV premium with a PVR, I get to watch all the shows I want.

DSTV = $66.00 a month for 80 Channels (+ 40 audio)

DirecTV (USA) = $50.00 a Month for 200+ Digital Channels (+ 68 audio)

WorldTV (USA) = $25.00 per month 200+ International Channels

DishNetwork (USA) = $29.99 per month for 100+ Channels

Actually, what is PVR's advantage on DSTV except allowing channels to be watched on the other rooms?

- Record 80 hours of TV Programming
- Pause live TV
- Watch two channels and record a third channel at the same time
- Rewind programming
- Fast forward and slo-mo programming you have recorded

this is SA..

Yeees? So?

How is that any different?

Same hardware... satellite in the sky, channels beamed around the world... same feed to other countries.

If anything... it should be cheaper... most international channels are cheaper than the USA home content. Google it...

Are you saying you are willing to pay more... just because this is SA?

no wonder people here just take the high prices!

Oh! I connect the Antenna with the normal DSTV to my Media Center PC, whoof! i have all this... :)

Aparently we can get sky entertainment here since its in the southern hemisphere and australia and argentina, collumbia all get sky channels. What do you guys think would you try such a provider ?

Why doesn't Multichoice charge by the channel? If they bring out an option where one can put one's own bouquet together - at a fixed fee for each - a lot of people will go for it. I am paying for premium, but in reality only watch MNET, movies, series, SS1, Disc, History, natGeo, and sometimes one of two others.

I am sure technology will allow for a "pay per channel" option.

This has been answered numerous times... but again... to make up your own bouquet... actually ends up making each channel more expensive....

Think about it... DSTV = R513 for 80 Channels... that is around R6.50 per channel. But if you wanted to make up your own bouquet... they would probably charge you around R10 per channel.

Secondly, it is not cost effective for the Carrier. If everyone only picked one or two channels, they would not make any profit or cover their overheads.

Thirdly, it would kill the smaller independent channels.... everybody would pick Movie Magic, but nobody would pick Food Network, or Fashion TV or Weather Channel. As a result those smaller channels die out... end result is less choice for us. Those smaller channels survive because of bundling.

They could change the Bundles, say 20 preselected channels and 10 other that you can choose from the remaining channels. That way they don't have to worry about people not choosing certain channels.

Yes, that would make more sense... as long as some of the weaker channels were being carried somewhere. There are some Satellite and Cable companies in the USA that give you this option. In fact... the USA is still heavily debating this issue of Channel unbundling... cos the consumers want it. The networks have not figured out how to sustain the current model or make any profit out of it yet.

the goverment has ordered multichoice to use 50% of its budget on locally produced shows. So in the end of the day you will be paying for that, if you like it or not.. Sky for the win

If you have a narrow focus in terms of interests, then yeah it does not make sense.

But for me, I could not live without DSTV. Formula 1, Cricket, Soccer, Rugby and when I'm really bored, Golf.

And the movies are cool, Music channels are cool, and you can't go wrong with Series channel, Discovery, History channels.

I get all those from the Net, series, movies etc...someone mentioned addidn the 450 to your ADSL account and you could get uncapped internet! what a great idea!!!!!

Computer + Internet > TV

Telkom/Neotel + price of show = $$$
Does it really download fast enough?
What shows are available online and how much per show?
Is there even such a service in RSA, or must one use international bandwidth?
I'm assuming you need uncapped, right?

This option will cost at least twice as much as DSTV.

what he is saying is, if you're paying +-R500 for internet and +-R500 for DSTV, rather pay R1000 for uncapped internet, and get the shows you watch, looooooong before TV. plus you get to have uncapped internet for other stuff.
