Is DSTV Worth it?

They should make it so you can choose the channels you want...

Say Mnet = R50pm
MM Channels = R30pm
Sport Channels = R40pm
Discovery/History Channel = R30

Then the other other channels (GRoups) costs like R20 pm

Id only get Mnet, Sport, MM, BBC Food/Prime, Discovery... Would work out around about R200

what he is saying is, if you're paying +-R500 for internet and +-R500 for DSTV, rather pay R1000 for uncapped internet, and get the shows you watch, looooooong before TV. plus you get to have uncapped internet for other stuff.

Yeah. Makes sense if you want Internet.
I hope one can get the shows in HD. That would rock!

I wish, I pay R250 pm for MNET alone.

At R1000 you won't get any uncapped internet right now. I think the cheapest is R1500 for shaped 384 or 512kbps internet access -
probably uncapped. Then you'll need a RapidShare account for
$9.95 (or whatever it is, I can't remember) and
a site or sites which list all the warezed shows you like.
That will cost you, time and effort in having to find these shows.
You can also use an torrent2http service which costs about
$15 per month for 30GB of bandwidth. You could also buddy up
with your friends and download some eps while they download others
and trade eps/movies/documentaries etc.

However you won't get the choice of DSTV ie, no Formula One or
no sports and no live news and its a lot of trouble to find, download
and finally play the stuff, then have to back it up or delete it
or spend time/money on burning them to DVD-Rs.

Maybe uncapped Neoconnect Prime (Neotel) at 2.6Mbit/sec
is worthwhile as that includes 120 Telkom minutes and
UNCAPPED Internet but once again the extra effort.

Also remember the Hollywood shows you'll be downloading
will be illegal (piracy, copyright infringement etc).

I must admit i had the same mentality about DSTV and thought i could live without it... have moved into a new place and thoight i could see how long i would survive without it... Its been 3 weeks and i want to pull my hair out!!!!

i dont always want to go to the pub to watch a rugby game (it gets pricey...) I enjoy watching aimless (but interesting) documentaries at night while i am eating....

Yes the movie channels suck and i dont use 90% of dstv, but i will be getting it again just for the sport channels and documentary channels...

And PVR is worth every penny
