I would like to create a website and looking at free hosting for the startup. Is free web hosting legit? In particular 000webhost.com, offering to host one free website. There are complaints on the web about their affiliate program but found no other information.

Recommendations would also be great.

Please and thank you.

The FTP access stopped working some time ago, but apart from that I have no problems with them.

Nope, and there is no way to contact them. You can't log a support ticket via the console on a free account either.

Oh dear, thanks for the heads up. I don't know how else to publish the website if not through FTP.

Is there any way of knowing for sure?

This does not mean that the site is any more secure than if you chose your own password.

The issues highlighted in the article were the storage of the passwords.

The passwords should be hashed and not encrypted as they claim they have now done.

Alot of local companies offer free hosting as well.

Think it was cybersmart?

Yes. Been with Cybersmart for a while. Built a WordPress site and just parked it there. Never had any problems though.

Trying it out won't cost you a thing.

Learned something new. Suppose it's up to the individual if they want to risk it. I certainly have doubts now.

Looking very promising. I will definitely give their free hosting a try, and upgrade as needed.

Ok, cool, but why with these cheap options, that come with support and ftp and all the good stuff, would anyone hunt around for a free webhost?

Anyone with decent internet access that wants to start online business with zero budget, who is up for the challenge.

Security crap aside, 000webhost seems much improved since I checked it out last. FTP is working fine - in fact better than it ever did - and there is no more popup advertising every time you load your page.
Having said that cybersmarts free offering looks great. Thanks to whoever mentioned them first - I'll def be using them in future.
The one advantage of 000webhost is that you don't need to register a domain if you just want to get something online to show people, etc.
