I know this thread is really rather old, but I guess I had a similar question, as I'm from the days of Zanet, Lagnet, and Blabber...
The only South African IRC chat servers that I could find, are listed on Chat27, and lately that only connect to the Atrum servers...
@rambo919 has a very good point about how toxic things can get... there are still a few diamond-in-the-rough conversations to be had, but you'll probably get your hands dirty, more often than not. IRC chat rooms used to be about community... it really doesn't feel like that anymore. Anonymity has become a dirty word for a reason.
